Timing Chain Cover crankshaft opening is the wrong size

I bought a new timing chain cover and I thought I had the right one as the timing marks lined up on the drivers side but as it turns out the new opening for the crank shaft is larger than the original, will it still work ? or am I better off getting another one that is the same size opening as...

    Varying spark, out of ideas

Wouldn't timing chain slop show up if you moved crank back n forth and watching the rotor? If sloppy chain rotor would hardly move.

    Varying spark, out of ideas

The timing should still be stable even if it needs rebuilt. If the damper hasn't slipped, it could be the timing chain slop but that doesn't sound terrible.

2006 dodge 3.3 timing chain slop.

I don't believe the 3.3s are interference engines. A broken timing chain would just be a broken timing chain, but timing chains on those engines are not a problem. I wouldn't touch it, but it's your money! Have fun!

I have these three timing covers for the big block engines. Any one that you want. $20.00 each. The timing chain and gear set is from back in the later 1970's or early 1980 time frame from the old Direct Connection, factory parts catalog. For the big block engines with the single cam bolt...

Where is the happening place to buy slant parts

If you need a timing chain, almost everyone has gone to one source that casts a thin three spoke cam sprocket. These reportedly have issues if you go past 4000 rpm on a regular basis. The exception is the JP / Roll-Master double row timing chain set, which is the one you want for a performance...

Timing chain cover and head bolt questions

Ok it's been quite sometime since I've put together an engine. (Over 20 years) First the camshaft plate under the timing cover. Mine has no slinger that I can find and 3 bolt holes, none of the three bolts have a hole for oil? It does however have a small drip piece. Also did Chrysler...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Well yeah, it kept on retarding the timing. As you retard timing, it increases top end power. To a point. lol

    Adding timing chain tensioner

I ran one, it broke and the flat spring tried to eat its way through the timing cover. Never again, the chain must be tight and I like rollmaster, they are an IWIS chain.
  22. Scody21

    Varying spark, out of ideas

There’s a “drive” side of the chain and a “slack” side of the chain. So moving the crank back and forth is not going to really show you how much slack you have. Best is to pull the cover and look at it with a degree wheel and check the amount of movement. If the timing is jumping 3-5 or more...

Possible Sources of Coolant in Oil?

Is the intake manifold still suspect on a big block? I wasn't sure if that was only on the small block cars. Thanks for the heads up on the timing chain.

    Mystery Rattle Noise

I replaced the timing chain back in March. Tomorrow I'm going to drain and pull the radiator so I can pull the timing cover and check to see if anything came loose in there.
  28. Professor Fate

    Fresh carnage!

I agree with 72B&B, no Loctite on the cam plate bolts. Bottom one walked out, trashed the gear and probably jammed between the chain and sprocket or the chain and timing cover and blew the side of the cover out.
  29. toolmanmike

    Adding timing chain tensioner

I did but wouldn't again. If you have a quality double roller timing set it is really unnecessary. I was thinking, where does the plastic go that wears off the tensioner block as it wears?
