If I knew how, I would have photo-shopped "Timing Chain Tensioner" in place of BAND-AID.:) Tensioners have their place, especially for high mileage applications. But adding friction and wear, however small, doesn't sound like a good idea.

In your mind, have you skipped ahead to what you’ll check next…….if the cam timing isn’t way off? While the loose chain isn’t at all optimal…….that by itself isn’t the cause of the missing 1+ second ET. The solid lifter……:thumbsup:

Exactly why I always advise against getting an engine kit. You're subject to someone else's decision of what goes in it. That's about the crappiest timing set money can buy. I've said it time and again. If you don't pay around or over 100 bucks for a timing set, you're gettin a crappy one.

Old Vauxhall Epidemics would wear the chain so bad you could hear it slapping on the timing cover. Eventually they would wear a hole in the timing cover and leak oil. By that time it was overhaul time. Silly things ran forever like that.

A bigger problem these days than sloppy timing chains I have encountered on small blocks is coolant leaks caused by pitted timing chain covers basically behind the alternator area where the cover curves around from vertical to horizontal

yes the distributor's rotor. with a socket on the crank pulley/damper bolt rotate anti clockwise until the rotor moves, then rotate clockwise until it moves again. if the crank' can rotate more than a few degrees between rotor movement at either extreme then the chain's stretched bad. hope that...

It is a bolt on in early years. Should be easy to find. Later years was cast into the chain cover.

please stop with the uninformed nonsense about the timing chain tensioner. the tensioner provides rock solid ignition timing and keeps the cam events from running "late" extra friction is more like hot air from the uninformed
