    Timing Chain

If I knew how, I would have photo-shopped "Timing Chain Tensioner" in place of BAND-AID.:) Tensioners have their place, especially for high mileage applications. But adding friction and wear, however small, doesn't sound like a good idea.

You'll get more responses creating your own thread, rather than highjacking another one. Just some friendly advice.

    Timing Chain

Most newer designed engines that use a timing chain also have a tensioner designed in to keep tension on the chain. Even motors from the 60’s like the Jag 4.2 straight 6 had a tensioner from the factory. My Kawi ZX6-R that revs to 17,000 has a timing chain tensioner from the factory…. It’s used...

    3.6 Pentastar Rattling

I think the only thing left turning on the front of the motor without the belt on is timing chains and cams. If its whinning with the belt, the power steering resevoir has a screen that will plug up, you can clean/replace it and that helped quiet ours down a bit. i just did timing chain job on...

Timing chain cover and head bolt questions

I should have done a search, but all honesty I thought I was so mistaken. I figured I was looking at it wrong or hitting it wrong or something. I did do a search on rockauto for front crank seal then checked years available, it was all over the place from as far back as 1955 to 1991 so I made...

...the intermediate chain and tensioners. I didn't bother with the oil pump chain (its very short/pita to get off) and my van had 173K miles on it (I owned it since ~40K) Total parts was $661 that includes timing chain, full set of engine gaskets, water pump, 8 rockers i didnt use, and trans...

    1988 318 engine

easiest way for the 'layman' to check how much stretch the timing chain has is pop the distributor cap off and rock the crankshaft back and forth on the damper bolt. the further it moves without the rotor moving in the dizzy then the more slack there is. you don't want much slack at all. to be...

Slant six to small block 340-360 engine won't fit.

You should try to get the timing cover back in place after a chain and gear R&R. In the vehicle. Silicone saved the day. It wasn't pretty but it didn't leak. It was a V6 in a 4wd. Dakota. I didn't want to pull the pan.

Project Cheap & Nasty Updated With Back Story

Project Cheap & Nasty is now a short block. New timing chain and new camshaft sprocket, but original used crank sprocket. Used stock cam and all. Used oil pump with big block high pressure sprAng. The rod bearings I had were for some kinda V8. There were 8 pairs and they were the wrong size, so...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

I worked with a mechanic who would not do a tuneup on an engine with 30k+ miles on the timing set. A bit excessive IMHO, but that was linkbelt chains and nylon cam gears. His claim was you can never get the engine to run properly. I turn the engine back and forth to get an idea of the chain...

    Evaluate Timing chain sets

I am getting ready to buy a timing chain set for a 318. Who has opinions of what Brand/PN I should get for a stock 318? Should I get a Double Roller? True Roller? Edelbrock? Cloyes? Help please. DKamp

I may have overacted. The search function works as it was designed to do and does it well. I just find more content to the subject I am hoping to find by using the "site" function on google.

Water in oil after rebuild - looking for guidance

Thanks for chiming in. It's a new timing chain cover.. I'm away from the motor for a few days, but I'll check the bolts. I've read of this issue but never fully understood where the trouble spot was with the longer bolts, just tried to make sure nothing was forced.. I don't remember battling...

440 power gains/ aluminum head advantages?

In your mind, have you skipped ahead to what you’ll check next…….if the cam timing isn’t way off? While the loose chain isn’t at all optimal…….that by itself isn’t the cause of the missing 1+ second ET. The solid lifter……

Timing sprocket gear loose against cam key.

Exactly why I always advise against getting an engine kit. You're subject to someone else's decision of what goes in it. That's about the crappiest timing set money can buy. I've said it time and again. If you don't pay around or over 100 bucks for a timing set, you're gettin a crappy one.

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Old Vauxhall Epidemics would wear the chain so bad you could hear it slapping on the timing cover. Eventually they would wear a hole in the timing cover and leak oil. By that time it was overhaul time. Silly things ran forever like that.

    Timing Chain

A bigger problem these days than sloppy timing chains I have encountered on small blocks is coolant leaks caused by pitted timing chain covers basically behind the alternator area where the cover curves around from vertical to horizontal

    Bent Push Rob Saga

yes the distributor's rotor. with a socket on the crank pulley/damper bolt rotate anti clockwise until the rotor moves, then rotate clockwise until it moves again. if the crank' can rotate more than a few degrees between rotor movement at either extreme then the chain's stretched bad. hope that...

    What causes "cam walk"?

Great idea! A little "JB Weld" to hold it might go a long way!

    340 has no timing tab...

It is a bolt on in early years. Should be easy to find. Later years was cast into the chain cover.

    Timing Chain

please stop with the uninformed nonsense about the timing chain tensioner. the tensioner provides rock solid ignition timing and keeps the cam events from running "late" extra friction is more like hot air from the uninformed

Timing sprocket gear loose against cam key.

I’m not a very smart guy but if the new gear is ******* junk, take it back and buy something better. Why would you run an old gear on a new chain?? Most of these chains and gears are garbage anyway but running a used gear is like making yourself a **** sandwich so you don’t go hungry. Get a...
