    318 Build? Help!

I don’t mean to poop in your cheerios but that’s a 260-280hp combo at best. And unless you are very good (read: precise) at setting up the valvetrain there’s no way it’s going to spin “7000+”, and there’d be no reason to spin it that high anyway because with a 216@050 cam on 318 inches it’ll be...

    Exhaust Manifolds

Wow, from a street drive 318 question to a picture of a top fuel car in less than 5 pages. Has to be a record. For the original post manifolds would be fine. If the build progresses, headers. With all that in mind, you can go quick enough to require a bar with manifolds.

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

There’s no way to build anything cheap! That D Vizard mission impossible build is now far removed from the original idea UT had in doing the project. Since they removed themselves from the original plan, freeing themselves up for upgraded parts, it has become more like any other build except...

    One for the 318 lovers

i mentioned this on another thread, but i've built this motor-- twice, in fact. it's fun, but all the power is between 4~6K so you're really gonna want a 4spd (or 5) behind it and some gear. it makes the number though!

    Mopars for ever.

Thanks for the add. I have finally got another mopar. A 65 Valiant, slant 6 but soon doing a 318 magnum swap. I grew with mopars. I am excited to build another one.

New to Joining the site! Hello

I received a question on why I joined the A body only site while I don’t currently own a A Body. My response is simple. I want a Dart. I have wanted one for decades. With the current 360 magnum build it has giving me new insight on performance possibilities. Once I locate the correct car, I...

273 swap to 318/ build, cost, potential, daily driver

First, you need to decide if you're going to keep that one year only transmission. If yes, it will need to be rebuilt.....and maybe beefed up a bit if you decide to add horsepower over the 180 the stock engine had that year. If you're ok using a later transmission, you can pretty much forget...

Best cam for the street both power & sound

I find that most people who talk trash about another engine probably never had one, had one and didn't know how to build and tune it or are just talkin to hear and see themselves talk.

    Exhaust Manifolds

My point there's a huge group that thinks that way, I'm for 318 but you got to accept there limitations. There's kind of two to main ways going about a build 1st seems to pick an peak hp and build for it and hopefully gear stall etc... For it, this is where most screw up, since most won't run...

273 swap to 318/ build, cost, potential, daily driver

...don't delude yourself, sourcing and building an engine is almost always more expensive that what you budget for. are certain aspects of a 318 build cheaper and easier than a 273? yes, absolutely. but a lot of the hard costs remain the same; machine shop work costs dough no matter the size of...

273 swap to 318/ build, cost, potential, daily driver

Your timing is impeccable! Through networking a friend of mine just found on FBMP a 1997 dodge 5.2 magnum 4 hours away from me for $100. 230k miles, needs complete rebuild. Compared to my already questionable 273… would THIS 97 5.2 be a healthy candidate in having the machine shop do a stock...

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

He knew and you knew and I knew 6 pages ago what the answer was. Should I build a 318 base 4 inch stroke motor until I find a cheap or free 360 block to build a 4 inch stroke motor? That was what the question should have been. I do not think anybody has been betrayed so I can not answer that...

    Nick's Garage dyno's a 318 Stroker.

It's a nice build and not trying to knock it, but it's not really a 318 anymore, it's like saying a 408 or 512 is still just a 360 or 400.

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

Thats the point there is no new cheap way to build a performance 318. This recipe here is it now you can add your own spice to it and see what ya get but...I know people cite the Vizard build but let me point out that engine isn't assembled ran on a dyno or proven yet I wouldn't get too...

The end is near for Hot Rod Magazine

Well I dunno what @Dartswinger70 means by proper build, but weather you paint it or not, a "proper build" would resemble a car that has had love distributed evenly. My personal build has many custom aspects with a "70s day II" theme. Everyone "proper build could be different, but I would avoid...

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

Less air flow is less air to compress in the first place. Easier to make power through large amounts inefficient fuel and air than highly efficient but very little fuel and air, the efficiency range for our type of engines aren't that huge. 1.4-1.67 lbs-ft per cid is an efficiency most of us...

    Are 340’s rare

For performance 318/340/360 all can basically take the same parts all can make more hp then most would build too, even a 273 bore size is capable of building enough hp to satisfy a majority of people. Everyone has from a slightly to vastly different idea of what and ideal powertrain is and even...

    318 build suggestions?

a six pack setup will cost you another 3k though... BTW.. don't take the 318 bashing in the thread as attacks or anything.. this happens every time a 318 is mentioned and literally 95% of us are just having fun with it at this point :)

What do you think about this 318 guys.

Well I'm nobody to enter into how-to-build-an-engine threads. But the above is almost exactly what I plan for my Coronet wagon. It has a dead stock 2-bbl 318 now, it will get Speedmaster loaded heads, a stock set of 72 TQ intake, carb, and 340 HP exhaust manifolds, double roller timing set, and...

Making power out of the 318

Having tore down both 318 and 340 Ill say I agree. It's in the details. People say the 318 is identical, only a little and its externally. So in theory all the little parts you'd have to obtain and swap into a 318 make it expensive to build up. Anyone who knows knows this. For example you are...

    72 340 build vs...other options

If just going by blocks (bore size) since most parts are interchangeable, would make 340 1st choice, 360 2nd, 318 3rd and 273 4th, cause 340 are expensive and hard to come by 360 would be the general best choice and if sticking with stock strokes makes a better streetable choice but 340 block...

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

Stop in for a cup of coffee

Welcome back! First, I don't use "stock style rings". They are regular cast iron and unfaced. I use moly rings on everything. I would step up to something better were I to build something like a race only deal....which I likely will not do again. The moly rings will be fine. I use ball hones...

I wish it was closer craigslist finds

Ooooh, I likes me a "boat tail" Diplomat. Should be able to build that 318, just like any other. Wonder why they dropped from 150 net to 140? IMO 9500 is a tad much, though.

318 head porting for the average joe

It's not about staying where your/I'm at, I don't know if you notice but most asking for build advice especially for 318 are generally novist and Super Stock, F.A.S.T, Pro Stock, Sprint Car, Nascar info and mods might be a little above their pay grade while they're trying to figure out which RV...
