John, should have gone to this auction. This Charger went cheap - relative - and is super cool!

Cost for labor on stroker build?

Should be same labor to build one as 340/360/318. As long as you have stroker kit with I-beam rods that doesn't require notching block. If you are a under 500 horsepower street motor you don't need H-beam rods. Stock 340 stroke is 3.31"... 4" stroker is 4.00". That's a difference of .69"...

Stop in for a cup of coffee

Much as I might want to do that I think my building a car from scratch days are over. Between my body falling apart and fixed income with escalating prices on parts I think I will just be happy with what I got. But man I wanted to build me a big car! 69 Coronet is way up on the list. Starting to...

    Maybe I've learned a good lesson . . .

I think defining a set of goals for the car will be the best thing for you to do. Define the goals, and build to suit. If you want 450lb/ft for example, starting with a 318 probably isn’t the best idea. If 20 mpg is the goal, your transmission choices and rear gear will change. So what do you...

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

That's why I find this topic/discussion sickening. Isn't there a about a billion threads on re-camming a 318 or adding a 4bl intake and headers? A. It's perpetually being brought up. B. Any amount of money spent on a 318 in the name of power is a waste unless its going to be reused on the...

The little 318 & Racer Brown's quality products

Don't worry about flipping the pistons, stock pistons had an offset and people use to install them other way around thinking it might pick up power, Engine Masters Show debunked it. Doesn't take much to make the stock shortblock into a strong performer, 4bbl cam (regrind) headers and. Heads...

    318 question

Have a stock 1989 318 with 302 heads. Wanting to do a budget build and try to get to 300HP out of it. What would you guys suggest for pistons and cam? Just looking for something that's going to be a good running street motor, nothing elaborate. Thanks all

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

Well I got off track but I agree, the logic minded 318 guy will eventually realize that performance with a 318 isn't impossible its just more logical the the 360 . I agree that, a 318 will sound good with a cam but those down in the hole pistons and sub 4 inch bore leave much to be desired...

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

Agree! When I built my 318 20 years ago, I was going to run a set of J heads. An old timer mechanic who worked next to me walked up and just casually said " don't do that you'll blowvyour CR right out of the water... I listened ran the 318 heads and the car ran fine but, it was a 150 horse LA...

    Another 408 Validation

Be sure to cc the heads if you're trying to achieve that 10.6 CR. I have those Eddie RPM heads and had to deck them to achieve the 10.5 CR I was after. Sometimes they're advertised as 65cc and sometimes 63cc. Best to just deck them to achieve the CR you are after and be done with it.

1.5 or 1.6 ratio how to choose?

Then get the 1.6s if that's what you want. If I HAD 1.5s already, no way would I spend on the 1.6s.

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

Machine work is a budget killer these days. There really is no way to do any of this cheap if people cringe at 500- 1000- 2000 dollars here and there they have to get used to it it's just numbers. If you want the good parts. It adds up.

    1968 Barracuda fastback..formula S 383/4spd..Restore or not?

I guess that depends on the OPs vision of a race car. Means something different to everyone. Fender tag gone, no build sheet, engine and trans gone. Just build a car he enjoys.

    72 340 build vs...other options

If given the choice between a 318, 340, and a 360, as a starting point. Pretty much everyone would pick the 340. In addition to the displacement advantage, let's not ignore the valve deshrouding advantage offered by the larger bore. Building a basic street motor? It's splitting hairs. Trying...

The poor 318 gets the same respect as the lowly 383. lol I ran mid 11's with a lowly 383 in the early 80's. lol I could probably build a lowly 318 to run the same with today's available parts, easily. lol

[SOLD] New Reproduction 394 Oil Pan 67-69 Small Block 273-318-340

I bought this for my barracuda to replace the dented stock 273 pan. I then decided to build a 360 instead and learned the hard way that this pan won’t work on a 360. This is a new pan, but I had tried to install it on my 360 short block so there is some sealant on the ends of the pan. Pan...

    Cheap 318 performance mods.

I hope you don't think that's what I was implying in my post. I was not I was simply giving him my experience. I'm all for building a budget 318 but in my situation the cost was gonna be the same 318 vs 360. So for my budget it was the best bang for my buck to go with the 360. I was in no way...

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

Bore/stroke/rod ratios don't mean squat for the Average build. Stop worrying about that stuff and think about the big stuff. Displacement, airflow are big things. The last thing Mopar had in mind was the 318, when the G3 hemi was designed.

how many cars do you have?

Normally aspirated? Had a friend in HS that had a 6.9 NA. Not fast, but loads of torque! It's funny what they would put the 300 gas 6cyl in. Almost like seeing a D800 with a poor little 318 in it. Reminds me of little max pulling the sleigh up the mountain in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

But you knew what I meant. The smaller engine is the underdog because it has to work harder to get the same output than the bigger cube engine does.
