First off I despise 383's possibly more than the 318. The 383 has no right to call itself a big block. I've built more than a few and they always disappoint. ALWAYS. I've actually been refusing to build them if the customer wants a " stock rebuild, im only cruising, don't care about performance"...

I didn't realize the op had a 440, I think I'd just stick that 318 in the corner and go with the 440. A stock 440 will make more power than any 318 he's gonna build. No need for high stall convertors or steep rear gears.

btw, KD this sounds exactly like my latest build. 73 318, 68 heads, "340" cam advanced a little, topped up with an LD4B running thru stock manifolds. i haven't decided on the carb yet but it'll be between 600~625. if it makes 280 i'd be tickled pink.

if you have a 318 build it, if not and you want 400+hp why look to buy a 318 to start with? i've had several 318's, the last i fitted into my valiant with a tunnel ram and solid cam so i'm not a hater. it's just easier and cheaper to get that hp with a 360 is all i'm saying.

My point was, everytime there is a 318 thread, the Teen haters come out of the woodwork. Geez, leave the guys alone. Let them build a 318 if they want.

There nothing wrong with pointing that out to the OP, and we'll see what he chooses, but some will beat the 360 drum to death even after if the OP decide on 318.

Probably depends on the person, to me it seems like above 450 hp is when people start thinking about adding a 4" stroke to 318/340/360. So probably above 450 hp could be considered high power for stock stroke sbm, guessing a lot would say even 400 + hp for a 318.

Yes, do that. Then you have some options. If the 318 is in good health, you could upgrade that in the car and save some cash. You could build a hotrod 360 on the side and enjoy a running car with a 318 until you have everything necessary for the swap. If the 318 is toast, well the answer is...

very good numbers for that build , best I ever did with my 72 318 back in 74 was a 14.8 1/4 mile which was respectable . all it had was cut heads 340 cam headers and a therrmoquad and holley street dominator intake 3:55 gears and crap G78 polyglass tires

The only 318 build i was involved in was 340 heads and intake with a crane fireball cam, sounded good but an old lady in a wheel chair could of beat it I a 1 block race. We were young kids and didn't have a clue, remember that like yesterday, ugg!

It's a 67' engine. August (8-66) would be a 67 motor.

Granted but, the 318 output is still pretty impressive & more than likely, a lot less expensive to build. It's just pretty neat to see people make good power with 318s. I think they're overlooked a lot.

my comments were based on the fact he was offered a 318 short block, which he asked what it was worth. so he did'nt at that point have any motor for his 400hp goal. on that basis a 360 would be more reliable/flexible and easier to build to that hp goal. as i also said i've had a few 318's, 360's...

The 904 vs 727 debate is almost akin to the slant 6 vs the 318... It takes a lot more parts and a lot more money to build a slant into the power a 318 makes stock. Same goes for the 904 stock they can't take the same abuse as 727 stock and survive.

Any 318 post is good.

I had to learn this lesson the hard way. I bought a new 394 pan to go on my 360 and it obviously didn’t fit! My first 360 build and I assumed they were just like the 273-318-340.

What about should I build a 318 with 360 heads thread? Those are always productive discussions....

that's the whole crux of the situation. he'll need 2K plus to shoehorn in the 440 vs [insert amount under 2K] to rattle bomb rebuild the 318 and be rolling around. then gather up the bits n' bobs to make the chonk block happen at [insert later date and time].
