I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

The leap forward they made with this printer is amazing. They basically took all the modifications people were doing to their printers, and used all the knowledge gained by people spending years tinkering and perfecting their settings and packaged it all up while also adding LiDAR. This thing...

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

Yeah no problem. I use a Bambu X1c printer with the automated material system. It allows printing of 4 different materials through one extruder head. Because I can print multiple materials in the same print then I can use a different material for supports. Supports are generated when you...

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

The first requirement I have for support material is that it’s water soluble, so that wouldn’t work unfortunately

Not diagonally in the x/y plane, but I may see about tilting it on the x axis so that it still prints sort of flat, but may not need so many supports

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

ok first full test print of piece #1 of the dashboard: mixed results. The issues that appeared are #1 warping again, and #2 the surface above the supports. The warping I was hoping would be eliminated by printing it sideways, but it did still warp a little, not a lot...but enough to make a...

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

Trying a full print of the first piece on it's side....29% done and looking good so far. 28 hours left to go. I feel like the print will be successful, but due to printing on it's side there's going to have to be some cleanup and sanding at the very least, from the supports. I've had so much...

Yet it's pretty amazing how things just emerge from the resin goo like magic

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

Two steps forward and one step back today. I did some touch up work on the model but decided to hold off on the glove box area until I was able to get some working pieces printed, so I don't have to go back and fix things if there needs to be an adjustment. I did attempt to print the first...

Just some more design progress...tomorrow I tackle the glove box area. yikes.

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

Honestly I'm just going to have my paint and body guy do it, I'm not disciplined enough to take it on myself, I would screw it up

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

I haven't tried painting it yet, at most I've sanded it smooth and applied epoxy resin to it, both of which worked fine. Online guides say ASA paints just fine like ABS. Thanks, I'm really trying to keep it looking like something that would have come from factory...really confuse the folks at...

I print in ASA and it likes about 90-100c on my printer.

Still learning it, the software can glitch a bit but I can live with it. Overall I’m liking it. I think it will really come in handy on the tail lights

lots of further progress today, got the rebuilt gauge cluster mostly done. I know it looks the same as the prototype, apart from the cutouts for lights, key, etc...but I'm pretty fond of the design I had come up with, so I will likely tweak and improve it a bit but it will mostly be similar.

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

Update: Finding it hard to directly work with the scan as it's just too damn big, something like 4M+ triangles. It chokes the computers. So instead I'm sort of recreating it in a form I can work with. Note the notches and sort of strange contour on the bottom of the gauge opening is from...

that's exactly what I'm doing, my original gauges was the long wide speedo. I'm converting to all circle gauges

    3D Printing a Center Console

I am definately going to make some changes after seeing one done by a guy on YouTube, but honestly the overalll shape is very similar to the original, which uses a combination of curves that intersect at sharp angles

I don't have a basis for comparison, but something like the radio bracket I printed for the rotating radio module is a 24MB gcode

    3D Printing a Center Console

I can't imagine printing a car wheel, that's nuts! Just from a strength perspective, 3d prints can never be as strong as something molded, or vacuum formed, or milled, its just not possible...but if he can make it work that's awesome

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

Yes, 3d printers run on Gcode, but there are many more parameters specified in printing than cnc. xyz movement of course, but also temperature, acceleration, line height/width, speed, part fan cooling, extruder fan cooling, limiting movements to within printed areas, the list goes on and on...

I'm 3D Printing a set of Dash Panels with Gauges

Certainly but everything comes with a tradeoff, right? ASA is similar to ABS, which is already used extensively in cars, but ABS can withstand higher temps. The drawbacks of ABS are it's not UV stable (though most of my printing will be painted), and ABS is a pain to print in large pieces, as...

Yes, I've accounted for that. I'm using ASA which softens at around 212F
