Ima thinking you(A56) know this; but for newbes reading this; Without headers, the Overlap cycle is sacrificed. All cams have overlap, even the factory 318 cam. Some say that headers put an easy 35 horsepower on an early 340, and that 340 cam sported only 44* of overlap. IDK if that is true...

Smaller engines definitely can use more gear, even very mild ones.

The 350 is making about 30 hp more at 3,000 rpm then the 318 pretty good gain, but the 350 also has better flowing heads.

Power loss due to switch to aluminum heads and higher thermal conductivity rate has been debunked. Above about 2200 RPM the combustion cycles too quickly for any appreciable heat transfer to occur into the cylinder head; vast majority of heat going into the head comes from the exhaust valves...

Well remember, 318 guys are always citing " budget" I figure if I need the 360 heads why not look for a whole engine....? I do realize the value of a closed chamber aftermarket aluminum head though on the 318 . I personally would not grind and port a 318 cast iron head unless I could flow test...

It isn't hate it just doesn't make sense to cite funds as a reason to not pick up a 340-360 but then dump a bunch of money into a 318. And some of us know in the end these guys would jump on a 340-360 when the right time and enough money permits. If anything its the 318 guys who are the haters...

My 66 Barracuda was born with a 273. When I got it there was a 360 in the engine bay. I wanted to go fast so I installed a 170 slant six :)
