I have 3 318's, 2 from -89 roller cams in cars & 1 solid from -77 sitting & while I was cleaning the roller lifters in one a guy said roller cam engines are Magnum engines... That pussled me as I never though so, what's the correct answer?

Pretty sure this lobe 5222 is his cam currently. Don’t think it would be my first choice lugging at 1500rpm in a 318 and looking for fuel efficiency.

There is no right cam that will suit everyone, question is what's the right cam for the OP and unfortunately only he can answer/find out that.

A really too wide temp difference can be a symptom of a semi-clogged radiator. A hot 360 with good compression and big cam will run hotter than a 318. Maybe nothing wrong?

Yeah, the short block has never been apart. I believe it had like a 126, *** miles on it when I pulled it from my '76 Duster. Still has the smog 318 heads. Basically a summit cam and 4bbl to be honest.

This entire discussion is for a 318 that is in my '77 M880 Power Wagon. I'll skip the details of how we got where we are now...but it's original and losing core plugs, 3 in the block so far. The latest is under the starter. Not hard to replace....but only a matter of time before I blow one out...

Holdner needs to do some 318 videos to show what can actually be done with like trickflows and my cam/intake (just want free dyno time) :)

K, i do have a question and this is just a question not an attack.... a 318 is pistons and a crank, if you put on good heads/cam/springs that's the same as you do on any motor to spin rpm, what is holding a 318 back from high rpm compared to a 340 if cam/heads/springs are equal?

I'm giving some thought to a fairly small Hughes HFT cam for my 318. Their website pretty clearly indicates their valve springs and lifters are the way to go with their cams. I have a good running 318 with good factory lifters, and this cam would be mated up with SM loaded heads with SM standard...

Good question. I do not know. The comp 260h works well to 212/212 .440 on 110, but I wouldn’t run it with 8:1

Yeah 360 foe barrah cam was the thee fawdy cam.

i've built a few 400hp 318's and they all had more cam than that. also they were just at 400 and straight up done at 6000ish the graph shows most all of the power at 4K and more, with that big goofy torque dip and flat right in the meat of where you'd be cruising. you could make the same...

so.. for a 318 to match that 383, NA, you would need what like 12:1 with trickflows and a cam that would make it unfun to drive?

My comment above about checking the Valve lash is one thing I'd check as this is a 1965 273 with a solid lifter cam. Yes you can put a Hyd cam in one with the 318's rocker arms but most never did. If the lash is too tight it will run HOT.

That is not too far off... not a lot of duration (more than I would use on a 8.5 through, I would keep it well below [email protected]" duration) and too wide a LCA (110 degrees) for the crummy stock 318 heads (Vizard) but that should have a lot of vacuum.
