Question: What is the Best timing chain setup LA or Magnum

So I was under the understanding that you shouldn't run both for what ever reason? I like the idea of this but have been told by others on the forum that it's not a good combo. I have a new one I could use....

Water in oil after rebuild - looking for guidance

This thread, post 22 shows the bolt hole that can damage the cylinder wall if a bolt is too long, and a measurement. Uh oh, power steering bolt broke into number one cylinder?

    Front plate/ water pump question

That's as quite interesting timing cover, where did it come from? I didn't see a small block one one AR's website.

Tear into it, or bolt in and go???

Just a driver? Drop the pan, check the bearings, timing chain and maybe a rear seal. Learned that one the hard way with an Olds 307Y that I put into an Electra I had from great aunt. Most other stuff can be done while the engine is in the car.

273 swap to 318/ build, cost, potential, daily driver

...a polish). then cough up $700(?) for pistons and rings, plus a bore and hone at i'd guess another $400 unless you can get away with just a hone and rings. if the rods need resized? there's another $200. double the price on the waterpump and timing chain to get actual decent parts that will...

Building a new 505 With Callies / Mopar Performance Block

I wanted a belt or gear drive too but that wasn't in my budget. Wish my timing chain set would get here so I can start working on this motor again.

    Adding timing chain tensioner

Right. Use the tensioner and lube it like I said. There is no such thing as a good timing chain. It’s the cheapest way to drive a cam. That’s why OEM’s use them. Not because they are the most durable or accurate because they are neither.

Timing sprocket gear loose against cam key.

...for the time being. Strangely after tightening the cam eccentric and cam bolt the play is gone. But regardless I'm going to order a new timing chain and gear set. I'm just going to use the current setup to get the Pistons and rods assembled and then replace the timing set when the new set get...

Guess this Lift and Duration n this mystery Camshaft!!!

I know it is a Mopar purple camshaft that’s all the info I have, I had a picture of the part number when I pulled the motor apart to put a new timing chain on it, let me see if I can find it. The engine came out of a challenger, date code is 68 so probably was swapped in some time ago.

    What causes "cam walk"?

The timing chain has nothing to do with cam walk. The rearward cam thrust is created by the load of the oil pump! The direction of the helical gears on the cam/pump drive want to drive the cam backwards when the pump starts pumping oil....which should be always. The lifter offset is designed to...

Building a new 505 With Callies / Mopar Performance Block

Finally, some of the parts are arriving so hopefully this project can continue. Valley Plate showed up today. Oil pan and windage tray came in last week. The timing cover should be here any day. Now if the timing chain and gears would show up, I could make some progress.

    Horsepower Estimate?

...rebuilt to 70 specs; steel crank replaced the cast iron one. The only issue I had was I had to replace the harmonic balancer and the timing chain cover. The late 340s had its top dead center mark on the timing chain cover on the driver side, where the early 340s had it on the passenger side...

    Magnum and Wiring Swap

...Cams Xtreme Energy .484 backed to a stock 904 and convertor. I wouldn't think that would be too much cam a stock convertor. Also when I put a timing light on it, the timing fluctuates 5-10* at idle. I thought that was odd. It has a new timing chain and the distributor hold down bolt is tight.

Looks like it needs a repair sleeve or get a new balancer. See the wear marks in the balancer snout?

    Timing Chain

I disagree... If it's a virgin 273/318 with the facory nylon tooth timing gear and chain, the first thing to do is replace it with a double roller of any kind, preferably a true roller double roller... The stock factory chains are junk, the nylon gets hard and chips off the teeth, making the...

    Timing Chain

Hey disagree all you want, I don’t care. But if I got a sub 100k mile 318, and it ran decent, the timing chain still wouldn’t be on my top ten list of things to check/worry about. It would definitely be on my list because you’re right, the original nylon coated timing gears are lame. But unless...
  24. Ddaddy

Any Pontiac guys on here? Need insight.

Open the timing chain cover and inspect. A worn nylon top gear on the cam will create slack in the chain that causes it to pile up on the opposite side resulting in a sound exactly like this. The bottom gear is steel so it maintains pull on one side while tension is slack on the other...

Timing Chain Cover crankshaft opening is the wrong size

Okay, first off if you have timing marks on the driver's side, it's not a '68 318 timing cover. A '68 front cover will use a cast iron water pump with a driver's side inlet. With driver's side timing marks, it should be using the later aluminum water pump with a passenger side inlet. using...

sb collant leak at timing cover??

I've found that by using a quality antifreeze and a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water that the timing chain cover will not get pitted, also it's a good idea to drain and flush the coolant system every 3 - 5 years, I prefer every 3 years.
