    crankshaft gear issue

thats what I wanted to hear or rather I didn't want to hear lol I guess i'll have to get a rollmaster cause I got these parts from performance inj equipment when I bought the heads and won't deal with him anymore over a parts issue. It seems that now out of the whole top end I got from him the...

    Fresh carnage!

I’ve seen gear drives get trashed from lack of oil. Timing chain wear is mostly from not getting enough oil on the timing set. And this is on not just Chrysler stuff. GM and Ford have the issue too. There is a big difference between a production car driven by the general public and a race...

    .480/230 cam in an 8.5 CR 360?

Good. So that means when I get my CR sorted, I'll be back to talk more about how much I should bump the cam forward. However it works, I'll shoot for at least 9:1, or more if that's how the parts work out. And acquire an adjustable timing chain set, as this one's not.

Timing Chain Cover crankshaft opening is the wrong size

I'm blown away that you cannot see that the first timing cover HAS a seal in it. That's the hole in the SEAL you're measuring. Damn.

    3.9 L Cam/Timing chain noise @42K mi. Normal?

...a farm in a VERY VERY dirty environment. I have seen several blogs that say timing train valve noise is normal. Some blogs say the OEM timing chains in early-mid 90s timing chains are weak. Usually factory problems last only a year or two. What is the deal here with this noise in a 2001...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

...wrong with yours if the slack is less than a half inch... copy and pasted from the web: The proper way to do that would be with the timing chain cover off. Essentially you're supposed to put a straight edge across the gears and measure the slack in the chain by pushing on it to see how...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Probably because the ones available now are more expensive than the standards and don't sell because you won't see any effect of the special chain set in 95% of applications. If potential chain slack really bothers you, the only solution is gear drive or belt drive with a stiff tensioner. Gear...

    Varying spark, out of ideas

Not the same timing problem but,, I had a similar low compression on a slant. The previous owner installed the timing chain 1 tooth off and drove it for years that way. Really rich and really low power. The rings, valves, etc... had tons of carbon build up. A LOT of blowby. After fixing the...

Low output at idle w/ac on?

...Whitey (5th) lost all coolant from the top of the aluminum timing cover! In all my years I’ve never experienced this happening. It must have had corrosion I don’t see when replacing the timing chain and water pump. So… the 5er is parked for now. Too much on my plate to mess with it right now.

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Double roller chain. Being a Chrysler authorised reman it is likely not a top name timing set, but I do not think another 100k miles will wear that timing set much more. My concern would be the cam and lifters being used with modern oils that do not protect the cam and lifters from premature wear.

    Timing Chain

The tensioners were designed for 3.9 v6 engines that had chain rattle issues. From what I have seen, the stock timing set was steel gears and a standard chain. You don't need a tensioner with a good quality double roller. The nylon rubbing blocks on the tensioners are too narrow and not designed...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

I was thinking that chain when spinning in the proper direction the slack is on the left side or back side like when you measure it shouldn't effect much at all its sorta like the drive/coast side of rear gears one side id driving the other side isn't in the chain it when the chain stretches so...

My 273 turned out to be a 318...what did I buy?

A roller 318 can go several hundred thousand miles. If the timing chain has been replaced, which is probably a good bet considering everything that's been swapped over, you're golden.

Placement of big round felt pad on crank behind timing cover

I'm curious about MoparLeo where he says: "Older engines used to have a large, felt washer installed there." Installing new timing chain on a 318, questioning the oil slinger Not sure what he means by "there". I should have paid more attention when I took my balancer / timing cover off...

What's the best way to find a dead cylinder?

A simple way to check the timing chain for wear (stretch) is to bar the engine over to TDC. Then with the breaker bar, try gently rotating forward and backward feeling for the slop. The cam and valvetrain restrains the rotation. A new chain may have a couple of degrees back and forth, while a...

how does a 318 engine run if timing is off ?

...timing with # 1 top dead center, have rotor at number 1, have triple check firing order. With out tearing down the engine to check the timing chain, and cam alignment marks to make that is ok, is there a way to check that? If you want to read more I have a post under any pertronix people ...
