LA 318 Cam / lifter gut check

You have a roller block, if it were me, i’d put oem roller lifters and cam in it and be done. The oem Mellings lifters are not that expensive and the spider and dog bones are still available in salvage yards from any magnum motor.

How old are you and how long have you raced

I’ll be 44 next month. Spectator my whole life watching my dad race bikes as a kid. My first pass in a real car was his 70 nova and low 11’s in my late 20’s. My barracuda made a few passes but always had an inconvenient leak just suddenly occur and get me flagged. Here as of late i’m putting...

    Nv3500 vs ax15

My nv3500 in my 03 Dakota behind a 239 v6 has been trouble free for 400,000 miles other than changing the clutch. Not sure what you would do for a speedo though

Factory hydraulic roller set up on an older block?

I did a mockup of this very thing for my 67 318. The oem roller lifters are too tall and the oil band cleared the top of the lifter bore with just the stock 318 cam. If you wanted to bush the lifter bores, i’m sure that would correct that problem. But after all that hassle, it would probably...

No, the small block stroker was built by Wayne after he bought the wrecked car.

Wayne Smothers of STS in Oolagah, OK bought it and fixed it up. He had it for sale for some time. Not sure if he still owns it

Making power out of the 318

Depending on the chamber volume and what they actually measure at, you could use kb399’s. They’re domed and could put your compression up higher where it won’t be a lazy low compression combo. What axle, gears and tire size does your car have? That has to be considered for your cam. Stall of...

How strong is an a-body 8.25 and can you make it stronger?

Everything has it’s limits. Weight, sticky tires or street tires. They do make 29 spline axles and crush sleeve eliminators for them. In the end, you may be money ahead in the long run with a 60 if you intend to race

    3.9 Stroker

Not sure on the un reliable part. Hit or miss perhaps. My 03 dakota with it’s 3.9 just passed 401,000 this week. I bought it new 21 years ago. My daily driver

    Where do I look now

I remember at one time he said his budget was 25k. I put an ad on hispost for a 383 dart that was restored 10 years ago and garage kept. It was around 22-25k. Did he ever call, look at it? I seriously doubt it. It was in North Texas if I remember

    More 3.6 carnage

Sorry to hear of your misfortunes. All those motors look great on paper, more hp and mileage. And yet all I’ve heard is “if” they can get past 100k now, trade it in and pass it off to someone else. My 03 dakota with a 3.9 v6, bought it brand new, now has 395,000 miles. Uses oil so I have to...
