10” Drum Brakes Options for A-Body 8-3/4 with Moser Engineering BBP Axles

In your original post you stated that your flange to housing offset is 2.36. That is the original A Body offset. B,C,E body offset ( C are most not all) are 2.5. Be certain of your offset. If it is indeed 2.36 you must use A body drum

Big Block A body K frame

Also remember that using that k-member means you need the block with the bosses to match. I’m guessing by the photo you have 383 mounts so those need a block with bosses cast in front of the #1 cylinder. 440 mount uses the bosses on the oil pump mount.

    Wheel studs issue?

I hope I answered that for you. No SBP cars were 1/2 studs. BBP were all 1/2.

    Wheel studs issue?

1.) Yes all SBP are 7/16 2.) A body SBP matched wheel studs front to rear so yes 7/16 rear as well 3.) Also yes. 73 on many parts started to match the B bodies Now let the comments on the oddities and rarities begin. Super Stock in 68 is one exception.

    1972 Front Disc Brake Conversion

A couple factors will change the braking characteristics. First is like you mentioned is the size of the cylinder. Second If you change the weight distribution, you can increase the “work” the rears have to do. (Move the battery to the trunk and lighten the front)You can also leave the...

    1972 Front Disc Brake Conversion

I’m actually a bit torn. I have full KH brake systems for my project but as mentioned all of them are SBP. I have original BBP rallies in both 6.5 width and 7 width. I’m going for an original look. So even the SBP rallies would work. I even found a pair of BBP rear drums that look like the...

    1972 Front Disc Brake Conversion

As a side note. Dynamic Friction makes new KH calipers for Mopar A bodies. You can use the Mopar caliper on those kits to retain the Mopar style brake line hardware. I plan on doing that with the kit for B body drum spindle since it uses the 73-76 A body lower ball joint. KH disc brakes with...

    1972 Front Disc Brake Conversion

I actually got a sales guy on the phone who was rather bitter about leed brakes mimicking their kits. Brackets everything are the same. The kits use a spacer and adapter behind the inner bearing to move the rotor outboard to match to the caliper location. It also provides the larger diameter...

    1972 Front Disc Brake Conversion

True they went out of business and were bought. But that’s no problem. The only custom machining they did was to redrill the rotors for small bolt pattern. Their kit like the leed disc kits uses Ford KH parts. So far those parts still seem plentiful new.

WHO'S GOT THE SCOOP ON RESIDUAL VALVES?

That depends on what part number you actually got. The residual valve is just behind flare fitting in the older masters. That video shows it really well. So if you have the part number that will tell me what it is. If it’s a new original design it will have a rear valve and no front.

WHO'S GOT THE SCOOP ON RESIDUAL VALVES?

Residual pressure in drum brakes is to maintain load against the return springs on the shoes. Removing it from drum brakes causes an increase in fluid needed to apply the brake. It causes spongy brakes and for front disc cars the appearance of no rear brake at all. Under normal driving you...

    Steering shaft diameter

Maybe got intimidated by the answers received.

    Steering shaft diameter

I know I’m late entering this but the only shaft DIAMETER that changed was the pitman shaft. A 66 A body would be the smaller of the two. A bodies got the bigger pitman shaft in 73 on the power steering only.

65 Commando stock brake set up

Not even sure. It appears the aftermarket is applying a kit here that doesn’t take that hardware. I searched through the parts listings on rock auto as well as the photos in my service manuals. Rock auto has those as the hold downs for the shoe but they don’t fit either the shoe or the backing...

65 Commando stock brake set up

You are correct. Sorry I didn’t emphasis that it was ten inch so the hardware was not all the same. But finding something to show the adjuster that the car would have. I’m hesitating to use the earlier adjust. I’ve read here in some posts they tend to over tighten. So after it’s you may want to...

Here is a for sale posting of a ten inch from a 65. It has the adjusters you would have. [SOLD] - 65 Barracuda/Valiant 10" Front brake drums, backing plates, hubs, spindles and beat up caps Look on rockauto. They sell new parts for the nine inch drums. The brakes on your car would have had...

65 Commando stock brake set up

Now I have found guys here on FABO that have said they used the 151 frame shoe and had satisfactory brakes. (151 is the Phord mud-stain 10x1 3/4 shoe. I haven’t tried it but seems promising. I have compared the 256 and the 151 and they seem to be identical. But appearances can be deceiving

And finally the 288 shoe. This is correct for my 68. Notice it has the tabs for the backing plate no pivot pin and tabs over the star wheel are also short.

65 Commando stock brake set up

Now that I’m home. Here is a photo of the 256 frame shoe. It would be “correct” for your 65. Notice the area where they ride on the backing plate does not have tabs. Also there is no pivot for the brake adjuster. And the ear above the star wheel is shorter

Question about 7 1/4" rear end differences

So the “Vader drum” is a barrier for water as well as an increase in surface area for cooling. Both nine and ten inch drums were made that way starting in 70. Not sure if it adds to the discussion any but AMC used the same thing on some of their drums.

65 Commando stock brake set up

Sorry for the constant posts. Things are coming back slowly here. As for friction material size the smaller shoe goes toward the front of the car.
