    318 combo

A bit of an update. Fitted the heads and cam about a month ago, runs very nicely. Unfortunately the bottom end was seriously low comp, so still only about 8.5:1 but runs much nicer, more torque, and the cam suits it very well. Thanks again for all the information and advice from everyone...

    318 Magnum temp sender

Hi all, Just a quick question - does anyone know what size the temp sender is on magnum heads? I think 1/8 NPT but I just want to make sure. Cheers

Where is your MSD box mounted?

I stuck mine under the passenger seat. Velcro on the base so it sticks to the carpet. Also easy to run a kill switch wire from it.

Overall overlap, or lobe center understanding?? ¿.

from my very limited understanding large overlap is ok for high RPM because there will be enough airspeed to cram fuel/air into the cylinder from the intake without the cylinder feeling the need to steal its neighbour's exhaust. I recently chose a cam for my low-ish comp propane 318, and...

I checked out the Comp cams videos as well, great stuff.

    318 combo

Thanks mate. Before I ordered it I called Howards and asked them about the one first suggested. When I told him I was using 1.6 rockers he basically said it wouldn't work - that the ramp on that cam was already pretty much as high as you want to go with 1.5 rockers. I really liked the specs...

    318 combo

I got the EQs with 1.92/1.60 valves. Didn't want to go too crazy with valve size because I wanted to keep the torque low. I thought about thinner head gaskets, but that would probably mean machining the block (and maybe heads) to true them up. I'll check out the deck height when the heads...

    318 combo

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered the Lunati along with everything else I needed. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

    318 combo

Thanks frosty. interesting to know. maybe the cam was installed retarded or with no advance. it was in the car when I got it. either way, I've got either a collapsed lifter or bent pushrod from the noise the top end is making so the cam is getting the flick. even before I converted to lpg...

    318 combo

Well, I spoke to Crow, Wade, and Clive cams today. Bit of a mixed bag. All recommended something in mid to high 400s in lift and low 200s duration at 50 (208-215). Where they differed was on LSA. Crow said that LSA should be 112 for better vacuum as LPG is heavier, whereas Clive and Wade...

    318 combo

Everyone is shut today, so i'm just tossing ideas around. The more I look at the Lunati 216/216@50, 454/454 lift the more I like it. 110 deg LSA which should hopefully up cylinder pressure a bit, decent lift, low duration. Am I right in thinking this should make for a fairly responsive...

    318 combo

I'll definitely do that Frosty. I was thinking that a high-ish lift short duration cam could work well in my low comp engine - similar to the Hughes whiplash cams but a little less radical. I want to keep the torque band down low, and from what (little) I understand about cams, as duration...

    318 combo

That's sort of what I was thinking. How about this Comp Cam - 212/218@50, 447/455 lift. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-cl20-221-3/overview/make/chrysler or Lunati 216/216@50, 454/454 lift. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/lun-80360lk/overview/make/chrysler

    318 combo

i think i'll just measure once its assembled and figure out pushrod length then. one thing I have been thinking about is the cam. I really like the Howards cam recommended earlier - 208/214 @ 50 .479/.494 lift - but I'm concerned that with 1.6 rockers the lift might be a bit high, bringing it...

    318 combo

quick question - does anyone know roughly what length pushrods I'll need for the EQ heads on an stock unmolested LA block? I don't mind buying adjustable ones if I can get a ballpark length.

    318 combo

Thanks all for the advice - I ordered a set of Iron Ram heads from Hughes yesterday. Getting all the other bits together now - just wondering if anyone knows where I can get some cheap Magnum valve covers. LA covers are like $30, but for some reason I can't find Magnum covers under about $170!

    318 combo

Chillipepper - I have thought about turbo, but it will totally blow my budget. No pun intended. The quality of propane in Oz is a bit hit and miss. The butane content varies which affects the octane (it's rarely pure propane). With iron heads I think 10:1 is about the highest safe static...

    318 combo

Thanks Dave. I'm looking at these MP rockers. Hughes have a kit but it's about double the price. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/dcc-4876050 I was looking at the adjustable pushrods on Hughes. I've seen the MP pushrods that are supposed to work for LA-Magnum head swaps but also read that...

    318 combo

To resurrect this, I've decided to go with the EQ heads, but I'm trying to figure out rockers, etc. I figured I might as well change the cam and lifters while I'm doing the heads, so I'll grab the Howard's cam & lifters suggested above. I'm not sure about which rockers and pushrods to use. My...

    318 combo

The EQ heads used to be made in Toowoomba, Queensland. Unfortunately the foundry that made them closed last year. I've checked with local suppliers and it seems that I can only get them from the US. Bummer, hey. In terms of valves, I'd prefer to buy assembled heads - which would presumably...

    318 combo

Not sure yet - I'm checking out some other shipping options at the moment. I've also asked Rogers for a quote on assembled heads so I'll see how that comes up. I really like the look of the Howards cam recommended by moturbopar. Short duration, reasonable lift.

    318 combo

Thanks - you guys are awesome. I've been asking for quotes for the EQ heads. Competition Products are out of stock. Hughes quoted me $795 for the heads (assembled) and $599 for shipping (ouch!) Rogers Performance quoted me $572.50 for the heads (bare) and $142 for shipping! Thought that was...

    318 combo

the more I read about the eq heads the more I like them. from what I've read on the hughes website it seems that if you use standard rockers with a flat tappet cam you need to machine the pushrod tunnels, but if you use a roller cam you don't. if that's right then would it make sense to spend...

    318 combo

Thanks for the replies. To answer a few questions, I'm running 2.92 gears, and propane in Australia is around the 100-102 RON mark octane-wise. The EQ heads do look interesting. I like that you can still use LA-style intakes on them as well. Is there much to be changed valve-train wise...

Hi All, You may have seen my 'goon in the welcome thread. I want to liven it up a bit. Currently it's got a bog stock bottom end with a warm cam (no specs, sorry but lumpy at idle), dual propane throttle bodies (slightly over-carbed) and slighty ported open-chamber stock heads. Running a...
