I bought a Summit Racing Crankshaft

At least it doesn't say Broader

    318 with a new 4” crankshaft.

If you have a 392, then i would say follow your passion. Do the people selling the stroker kit for $1500 also sell a balanced version of that kit? It would probably cost a bit more, but it would eliminate the need for a machine shop. Although it seems like all you need to get the 318 going now...

New Mancini Timing Cover Fitment Issue

I got a replacement timing cover from Mancini a few days ago, luckily I didn't have any issues

Someone needs to start re-casting 340 blocks

Dan was talking about going to see some 318 car last week an hour away with air conditioning, but haven't heard if he came home with it yet, but I hope he did!

    318 with a new 4” crankshaft.

Does KB still make hypereutectic pistons for that combo? I think if they still do they would use the less desirable thicker 5/64th size rings Having done a stoker build on a 340, I would buy the kit instead of piecemeal like I did. Maybe check out protocol tom in the classifieds. Get the...

    360 Cam suggestions

Hey just send it, I did the wallace dynamic compression ratio calculator with your 11 to 1 compression ratio and the aforementioned cam I suggested above, which gives you 197.20 cylinder pressure, probably a little too high for comfort even with the speedmaster heads, so I am removing my...

    340 motor mount orientation

Don't the mounting brackets go behind the ears on the driver's side, and in front of the ears on the passenger side. The photo also shows the passenger side behind the block ears

    360 Cam suggestions

This is a pretty good all around dd/performance cam for a 360. Good lift to duration, especially with your speedmasters heads and a 1.6 rocker, if that is what you have. A little wide, but good vacuum, street manners, etc.

    Trick flow harmonic balancer

Thanks for that link, I was holding off asking until I determined if it would be needed. My build which typically go zen like has been going off the rails a bit today mostly due to a not so smart 340 block marketplace purchase by me with issues and trying a new machine shop which left me with...

    Trick flow harmonic balancer

That was my thought as I was tightening the balancer up as it got closer, but I think it should be good as is. I have rotated it and the balancer is pretty true and does not get any closer

Btw, thanks for taking me over 100 PBR!

    Trick flow harmonic balancer

Good to know! I am just going to send it, unless I have pulley alignment issues. I bought that damper on sale, but not sure if I would purchase it again I have been happy with the summit branded SFI dampers in the past

    Trick flow harmonic balancer

I know it has been discussed before about trick flow's harmonic balancer being bigger and heavier than most, but I wanted to post an image of how close it actually is to the timing marks on the timing cover, .024". With crankshaft end player, that brings it down to. 019"

    Another 318 set up

I did a low budget 318 build a few years ago. Nothing special kb167, a xe250 cam, performer intake, summit 600 carb, summit ready to run distributor, hooked headers. I avoided machine shop charges by using stock bore size and used a .028 head gasket. Heads were just stock 302's. I didn't...

Paint it, Clear it or Let It Rip?

looking like *** in no time One of the funniest responses I've read in a long time. Actually chuckled out loud. But your right about using fuel resistant paint, and that duplicolor engine paint with ceramic is no bueno. Btw, the op's manifold looks great!

    Cylinder wall weld??

Might as well hone the cylinders too if taking the block out to be decked

I think i broke rear main bearing

I went back and looked at the op's initial picture and you are correct, it is the factory bolt with plenty of clearance. I am currently assembling a 340 and used arp bolts with their washers which stick .020 above the pump mount. I will definitely check clearance with the pump when I get it...

How far in the hole 318 pistons

Not sure it helps,, but I measured a 1986 318 block yesterday and the piston were .058 down in the hole. I know different years had different piston heights. I had thought these roller block era had higher compression heights, apparently not.

    Vacuum Secondary Conversion

340, sounds like the previous owner must have built it with more stip than street intentions. You have good parts, the distributor should work well even on the street. Easy to adjust advance rate with different springs and total advance. Many people run a dp on the street. Probably not optimal...

    Small Blocks

It would be nice if everything was compatible between blocks, such as motor mount ears, every block internally balance to eliminateconfusion, zero deck height pistons, thicker walls on the 318 to allow 4" bore, heads without pushrod pinch like the t/a cast without the pinch or adoption the w2...

    Vacuum Secondary Conversion

That sounds like a good plan! Do you think you would keep the factory heads, or upgrade at the time? I tend to like AJ's build posts because he can run the numbers methodically and can tell what works with the current engine building goal posts. I wanted to find out if those goal post have...

    Vacuum Secondary Conversion

What are chimps and average dudes figuring out? Read what, and ask questions to who? That is what I have asked here for someone to post their unicorn build that is running 195-200 psi on the street with pump gas and cast iron heads. Is the ignition severely retarded, cam timing? The only...

I think i broke rear main bearing

Sorry DD, I was referring to the top of the pump hitting the main being bolt when it was being installed, not if there should be any clearance with the pump and the pump location. Although you bring up a good point. Who uses a gasket there and who doesn't?
