Ok, so I have updates. First of all, my local Advanced Auto had an oil sensor socket with both 1" and 1 1/8" patterns inside one socket. Of course, the socket bottomed out before the 1" pattern actually come in contact with the flats on the sensor. My choices were to order a 1"-only socket...

So what's the consensus on that mysterious spring in the filter nipple? Leave it be or pluck it out?

Shoot, I hope i didn't already bugger it up with by 12pt socket attempts. Don't think I'll be able to get vice grips or channel locks on it. I think its about a 1" size. A 1" 12pt socket was just a bit too big.

I couldn't get a socket to fit. 15/16 and 1" were both off. Any tips?

Thanks for the reply. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do without having to pull the engine. The nipple that the filter spins onto has a hex head, can this be replaced? Then maybe run some kind of cleaner through the oil system, replace with a heavier weight of oil and I'm good to go...
