The pulley should be bolted to the hub of the balancer. Turning the pulley by putting a slot in it & using a cheater would put the force on the hub. Shouldn't cause the ring to slip on the balancer.

Shouldn't you ADD clearance when adjusting the valves cold? If the parts expand as they get hot I would think both the valves & the pushrods would get longer, causing the clearances to close up. Being long, narrow parts they would expand more than the cast iron block & head. I thought this...

Don't remember when they went to hydraulic lifters but if you have solids the tune-up includes making sure they're adjusted correctly.

Don't know how many miles you're putting on your car but in the old days points needed to be checked & adjusted a lot more than once a year.

You might do a search for Clifford. They specialize in 6 cylinder stuff. Don't know if they offer a complete exhaust system or not. You might also ask over on www.slantsix.org

I'd be sure to check the valve adjustment. Loose valves can cause low compression readings. People tend to totally ignore it on these cars & it's not unusual to find them so far off that it's surprising they ran at all. It's really amazing how tough the slants are.

I think it's a decent deal. If you plan to keep the 6 cyl. then you don't need to worry a lot about the rear end. The 7 1/4" will hold up okay behind a reasonably driven slant 6. If you buy the car, MAYBE you can find a local school with an auto shop class to help figure out the engine problem?

I didn't think of this earlier but I also need the plastic cover for the trunk latch and the cardboard wiring cover that goes across the back of the trunk.

I'd like a good 3 spoke woodgrain steering wheel, but not likely there's one on that car.

Have you tried PB Blaster? It's a penetrating lubricant.
