Break in time for new engine

I run mine thru several heat cycles after cam break in, change the oil. Head to the track. 1st pass shift at 4500, let engine do the braking to "load" the rings. Next pass 5k or so, same engine brake. Little higher on the 3rd Then let er eat. You may also notice a drop in operating temp...

What cu. stroker would you pick?

The 3.79 does look intersesting. Could be done with a production 360 crank if one wanted to go that route. But the longevity vs a new forged unit could be debated. The 3.58 stroke can get you there with a good top end. W5 and up series or indy possibly. Would prolly have to twist it pretty...

    Early LA 360 Blocks

Strokerscamp: yup lol on the amt taken out to get bore size. Same on cranks, etc. Try not to confuse them (not all) by getting into offsetgrinding vs stroke k? Lmao

    Early LA 360 Blocks

MD: nice. Did you o ring or check deck thickness? If so was it +/- the published .500 average? Yes, i do have my own opinions & theory's, but what good are they if they cant be tested, and or put up to others. Wether they be like minded or not.

    Early LA 360 Blocks

Strkrscmp: Hale Yeeea! Thats what i want to hear. I have no blocks past 73 left in my collection to compare an early to. Only 340s and early 360s. Was sure someone had already done this, but didnt want to read thru a bunch of condescending juvenile bs to get to it. :) Higher nickel in the...

    Early LA 360 Blocks

Something intellegent, preferably from actual hands on experience, that a more experienced engine builder than myself would know. But thank you for your ingenious answer to my rlr cam ? MRL--Thank you. That does help. Is there enough material in the early block to modify it to magnum oiling...

    Early LA 360 Blocks

K Will do thanks. Was interested in other than the obvious. Block strength, cyl thickness, overbore capacity (CAN it go to 4.1 like a 340?) not so concerned about ability to go roller as am very happy with my solid flat cust grinds, and drop in rlr lifters have been avail for some time. Would...

Yup, your rite on the intake, i have both, wont run either of them, too slow. Just dragged them out and checked. Original is 180* opposite on runner design, planes reversed. Shame on me upsetting the all knowing tech gods that way. I wont run

    Budget build on the cheap

Just my .02 on the thin head gskts: have seen many an undecked block and not resurfaced head leak, spray out ex side, or worse with theese. Ok if both block & heads have been resurfaced, but only both, not just the heads. I tend to be a little more cautious and would go with the .039 gskts. Not...

    340 Engine Cast Question

To correct myself the 72 moho 60 i have is a -1, very nice casting. The 71-2 is the one with not so straight bores. (int to ex not front to back)

    340 Engine Cast Question

Airwoofer: the 71-1 i have has virtually no core shift. It was a motor home block. The 71-2 isnt as consistant. Has a few cyls that are very close, if not into the cam tunnel at the bottom. I would say -almost- any of the 70-74 360 blocks would be the ideal ones to use for 4"+ stroke.(if one...

    318 magnum HELP!!!

I'd guess at least a crank kit, oil pump, possibly lifters and a good douching. Mags oil thru pushrods too so... Or, on the extra cheap, new king main & rod brngs can be had for as little as $40 for both sets, new. Clean out the pump and pickup, cross fingers.

    340 Engine Cast Question

Interesting, as i have seen dash #s as high as 27 on 318 blocks, shouldnt ever rust that way. My 72-73 340s are -6 and 7 71 360 is -2 72 360 is -1. Makes perfect sense

    340 Engine Cast Question

Date will be on the pass (other) side. From what i've learned the -dash- # indicates the # of castings or revisions that particular mold has made. -1 would be the first -2 the second so on.

Yet another "whats it gona run" 373" sb

Was an 11.4-11.6 player in my car with the tight convertor. 11.7-11.8 with the slip & slide. El sloppo killed the top end, and 60'-660 was about the same so went back to the tighter turbo action when 373 came out this time around.

    Budget build on the cheap

Be a happy little pump gas street motor. Smooth idle, fairly responsive and pretty darn torky. Good intake to put on the 340 cam. Basically an aluminum copy of the original iron hp 340 int, which was state of the art in its day. Could use a little more carb tho.

Yet another "whats it gona run" 373" sb

Heres the deal: a friend had some problems with his 408 (cyl split) and needed a motor asap to run nmca at indy this weekend. I loaned him my 373" backup bottom end for the event. 72 340 block, 4.071 bore (bit loose) 3.58 stroke 360 crank, mains buzzed down to 2.5" Stock late 70s 318 rods...
