Probably a real dumb question but ....

Look at the diesels. They start at high compression, and run upwards of 90 lbs boost. It's the total package

    Draw-through carb info?

I agree. I hade to water heat the carb to turbo adapter. Without the heat, the idle was like a big motor blown gasser. Surging up and down. The adapter had frost forming on it. My adapter was just a 3 inch "log" with a plate welded to the top for the carb. All I did was epoxie a piece of copper...

    Draw-through carb info?

Good article. I did mine slightly different, but essentially the same. Just have to remember if you later use the carb on a normally aspirated engine, you still need to connect that tube to the intake manifold.

    Draw-through carb info?

I'm not sure about other carbs, but with the Holley you need to have a separate intake vacuum/pressure line from the intake manifold to the carb. The stock Holley senses intake vacuum from the base of the carb. When used as Draw thru, it is possible for the base of the carb to "see" vacuum even...

    Slant 6 work truck

I have a '84 D-100 with a A833OD. I'm thinking about a turbo for this, also. I haven't don'any research on sizing, yet. I am just looking for a little more pulling power when towing my racecar up a long grade on the interstate. I'm thinking about 5-6 lbs boost. I don't want to go inside the engine.

    6BTM or locked out timing?

For a street driven car, you do not want fixed timing. Most street driving, is done "off boost", so why set up the ign timing for the small amount of time you will be on boost. Performance and fuel mileage will suffer. Spend the money for some kind of boost timing control.

turbo: blow thru vs. draw thru

Yes they were. I have a Pontiac system on the shelf. There was also a Buick system. And I think the early "K" cars were draw thru with a carb.

turbo: blow thru vs. draw thru

Yep, that is one reason, MOST turbos available in salvage yards are not good for draw thru. They were used on blow thru, and don't have the proper seal. Some turbos do have a replacement seal set available that is compatable with draw thru. I used a 1966 Corvair Spider (Rajay) turbo on my 65...

turbo: blow thru vs. draw thru

No different then a carb without turbo. And remember the turbo doesn't keep spinning at full rpm. When the throttle closes, exhaust voluum goes way down, and the turbine/compressor slow down.

    turbo 6 bangers post here

What kind of issues are you refering to? When turbos first came out (in the 1960's) on american cars, they were all draw thru. The main issue that draw thru turbo has, is the new(er) turbos do not have the proper shaft seal, to prevent oil from being drawn into the intake system, in non boosted...

    turbo 6 bangers post here

Can't see it in your photo, but you should heat the carb base. I have a draw thru, that I built in 1979, and had idle surge, untill I heated the carb adapter with heater water. PS: My turbo had the seals. It was designed for draw thru.

Draw through slant six turbo setup

The carb adapter is water heated. When I built my draw thru setup, I found I needed to heat my carb adapter with hot water, or the idle would surge. Without the water heat ice would actually form on the bottom of the adapter, at idle. There was no problem above about 1500-2000 rpm.

I have a complete setup, including the "correct" Q-jet. I was going to use it on a slant, but will never get around to it. Message me if you are interested.

There is a Slant Six Shootout at Mason-Dixon Dragway, in Hagerstown Md, this coming weekend. Sat is TnT with a slant six race, and Sun is a Mopar show/swap meet/race. There is a second slant six race on Sun.

    3 questions about 6s

I really can't comment on the reason for oil pump gear failures, on the slant. I know many people have had a problem. I have been running slants since 1974, mostly 170's, and have never had a failure. I have turned my engines as high as 7200 rpm. I use a stock type replacement pump (which is...

    170 vs. 225

The advantage of a 170 over the 225 is its ability to rev. With a turbo, that is irrevalent. You don't need or want high rpm. Personally I would use what ever engine I had available. That is what I did in 1979. I used the 170 that was in my car, already (didn't have to buy another motor). Used a...

turbo: blow thru vs. draw thru

Yes, you are correct. I am trying to cheap out. I built this car, back in 1979, and ran it until 1985. This was before manufactures would give out their "propriorty" info. It has been sitting since then, due to life and other projects. I am putting it back together, the way it was built back then.

I think you should change to a draw thru setup. I just happen to have a Genuwine Anteque system using a Rajay turbo from a Corvair. It is complete and "period" correct. I would be willing to trade for your system even up.:wink::wink:

turbo: blow thru vs. draw thru

bohica2xo Is it still possible to get Rajay parts? I have an old "Crown" modified Corvair turbo (draw thru) on my 170 slant six. I also have a new "E" flow, with a missing compressor wheel, in the box. I removed the wheel, about 20 years ago, don't remember why, and misplaced it. Thanks for...

Bill, I was just REALLY looking at your picture. I would recommend changing the rubber hoses coming off the "Y" block, to braided. A lot of tracks will bounce you in tech, if you have over 6 inches total system of rubber fuel line.

Slant 6 turbocharging- yea or nay?

not my post My question, why a roller cam for a slant six? For less friction or faster lift rates? If for faster lift rates, why not consider a "mushroom" tappet cam. Almost any cam grinder can do those, for about the same price as a regular cam (uses the same blank). Mushroom tappets are...

Slant 6 turbocharging- yea or nay?

Dan, I have not read that book but would really like to. Can you point me to it? As for my comment, I stated that I was not up on the design history, but "in my opinion" they were not the same. Key words, were "in my opinion". I was stressing I did not know for sure.

Slant 6 turbocharging- yea or nay?

Bill, I'm really not into the design history of the slant, but (this is my opinion), I disagree with the statement (I have heard this before) that the slant six was designed as an aluminum engine, and therefore the cast iron version is much stronger. I have looked at both blocks. If you compare...

    Rajay Turbo?

Rajay turbos are not the way to go. They are "old" technology. The turbos made today are so much more efficient, plus the problem of getting parts for the Rajay. Here is a picture of the turbo installation I did back in 1979, with a Rajay. Modified Corvair unit...
