    Riddle me this, Batman!

Vacuum advance connected to carb? Even on timed port, throttle blades could be open enough to activate, or connected to manifold vacuum. Slipped balancer ring checked with piston stop and degree wheel?

Occasional Oil Pressure Light for 2-3 seconds in my 318. Should I panic?

After verifying proper oil qty. I’d plumb in a manual gauge to verify. If it’s verified to be actual pressure drop, I’d be contacting the installer. If they bought the engine to install they should have the paper work. I’d personally believe if it’s a brand name reman there should be a warranty...

    Can you identify these pistons?

Correct his are cast. That’s the issue with the interchanges from one brand to another. They were forged from Dodge but once you started getting into after market different companies produced parts that would “work” but were cheaper, to make them appealing to peoples wallets, that’s how places...

    Can you identify these pistons?

Here’s what I’ve got from my old books. Nylen 952P interchanges to 2268P sealed power. The hand written P260 (safeguard brand)uses the same rings as the 2268P. 1963-1968 premium engine and 1963 standard with hydraulic tappet 318. All I’ve got.

Low fuel pressure after making pass down track

If the gauge doesn’t have an equalization valve on it, with it being above the engine the heat will cause the pressure in the gauge housing to increase. This will increase the pressure on the outside of the bourdon tube that actually causes the needle to move. This will cause the gauge to read...

360 Magnum Crack....head bolt to water jacket

To me it doesn’t look like it extends to the thread insert. It looks more like a tool mark off the water jacket which kind of lines up with the mark on the actual insert. Only way to know is to have it dye penned, mag particle inspection, or other means. My thought is if it is cracked due to...

Cause of Excessive Smoke after Adding Gas to Tank?

My question is do you normally run ethanol free gas? Did you by chance purchase pre mixed fuel at a marina? Was the choke open if it has one? I see you said 2bbl so I’m thinking factory carburetor.

High oil pressure after oil change??

Pump does have a relief. The filter has a bypass that could be opening due to filter media being too fine. When the filter bypasses all the oil isn’t being filtered. As stated I’d try a different filter or go back to what worked.

Here’s what I’ve got in some old books I’ve got. Don’t know if it’ll help. Added Plymouth and Chrysler.

    Used cam wear pattern

Flat tappet cams are not ground square. The cam profile is ground with a taper across the lobe width wise. This causes the lifter to rotate along with the lifter face being convex shaped, due to this the lifter face won’t hit square all the way around the cam lobe. You could pull the lifters one...

    Bent Push Rods

The oil pan is off maybe plasti Guage rods and mains, maybe compression leak down being as it’s unknown to you. The pushrods not being true could have been that way when installed. If it’s all good I’d fire it up. It does look very clean inside. As far as slack on timing chain and gears, it...

340 with metal in oil pan

Personally I’d go over everything. The rods on the big end have a large and small chamfer. If the piston is backwards there’s a good chance the chamfer is incorrect. You “may” find crank damage.

    Cam swap

Only thing that’s a “pitfall” a lot of people go dot to dot (cam mark at 6 o’clock and crank mark at 12) this sets up the #6 cylinder to be firing. Crank at 12 and cam at 12 sets #1. Lot of people seem to install dot to dot and set distributor at #1 and fight getting it to fire because...

340 seems to be locked up

Last it moved freely was while connecting torque converter. So that’s where I’d go back to. Flexplate installed properly, meaning front and rear. Proper bolts in torque converter to flex plate, if they are not correct the bolt head will catch on block. Was the converter properly seated onto...

    Double v-belt Alt/AC...one is loose.

Or you could go thru their belts and look for a small number identified on the belt. That used to be the batch number and belts with the same batch were used in matched sets. Had a Gates rep tell me once that there could be up to like an 1/8” difference in length with same part numbers. If I...

    Flutter below 2k rpm

I know you said you’ve tried different carbs, my experience years ago was going too lean on primary jets in a Holley. Wasn’t exactly a misfire or back fire. Just had like a “flutter” at steady rpm. Wasn’t really noticeable but could feel it, like a surge. If that makes sense.

Main bearing torque lower on two caps?? Mistake...

Engine doesn’t sound right to me

Personally it Sounds like the headers are leaking to me. They can be a pain to seal up. Should be able to take a long handled screwdriver and use it as kind of a stethoscope to help pin point it. I personally use the aluminum gaskets because they’re thick enough to make up for warpage and...

Added oil pressure gauge no idiot light doesn’t work.

Easy enough to isolate. Unhook lead for light from switch and ground it. Light should come on. If that works connect to switch and provide a jumper ground to switch and see if light comes on. Could also ohm out switch installed with ohm meter and check to ground. Could be a bad switch.

    Mystery Pistons need ID

    Intermittent crankcase pressure issues

Are the baffles in place in the valve covers for the breather and pcv ports? Where do you have the PCV plumbed in to? What weight oil, this may effect how fast it returns to the oil pan especially with high volume pump. If you are running a non stock breather (no hose to air filter housing) it’s...
