    72-78 440 piston vs earlier 440 piston?

Could a 1972-78 replacement piston be used in an earlier 440 without issue? The listing for pistons are usually '66-71 then '72-78....

Help me win this argument 400 in a 72.

Agreed, I even remember in the late 90s when stuff was dirt cheap. Then something happened in about 2000 and the stuff got stupid overnight. Barret Jackson had something to do with that I think. People have junk in their back yard and see a pristine one go for 100k. They think they are in for...

Help me win this argument 400 in a 72.

Cubes are great but I tend to build what I have laying about. When you are financially challenged, you do the best with what you have.

Help me win this argument 400 in a 72.

Can't agree on that. If you want boring..350 all the way!

Help me win this argument 400 in a 72.

You are way behind the times. Today the technology has evolved so much with speed parts that even a 318 can run like hell.

power steering and manifolds with a 400..?

Cool. I said the mid 60's manifolds because it's what I have. People want stupid prices for hp manifolds and I'm not paying it.

power steering and manifolds with a 400..?

If a 400 is installed into an a body, will power steering still be able to be used? What about using mid '60's c body manifolds??

    383 In A '38 Chrysler

That's SWEEEEET! I have a '41 Dodge p/u with 318 power. 350's don't belong in Mopar rods! SBC's are belly button and boring. Overall...way cool!!

    7 1/4 stock 400

The SG 7.25 is quite a bit stronger than the peg leg. I drag raced with one for a couple of years. The open 7.25 is a bomb waiting to go off. It's just a matter of time..

    400's are they any good?

That's real respectable for a stockish 400 with a 3.23 gear. Bigger carb would juice it!!

smoke from breather cap on 400??

Thanks guys! I knew it was one or the other...

smoke from breather cap on 400??

    Would this be considered blowby??

    400's are they any good?

I'd build a stock stroke 400 without hesitation..go for it.

    400's are they any good?

I been tinkering my 400 more and more lately and am pleased with it. I have an older Hughes cam in it (470 lift, 214 dur and 108 LSA), Edelbrock Performer 383, rejetted 600 Holley (works good but a 750 would be better), exhaust manifolds with 2.5 inch dual exhaust, double roller timing set, high...

    400's are they any good?

All you need to make a 400 go is these simple hot rod rules. Compression, heads and camshaft. An 11:1 400 with a solid cam would be way to much fun in an a body!

    400's are they any good?

I'm not convinced that you always have to build a stroker to be happy with a 400. It is a good route to impressive power with a 451 build though. I have a 400 in my '65 Newport that runs very good considering how heavy the car is! *Hughes cam with matched valve springs *452 heads *Double...

    413 swap

Yep.. Some people throw additional welds on the k frame but most of the time, it's really just overkill. Unless you are running obscene amounts of power and torque, fear not for the stock k member is more than plenty strong.

    413 swap

I had one of these rebuilt to a 426 (.060 over 413). I'd slap the 452 heads on it, change the cam and run a car water pump. Torque monster. For $100, you are out NOTHING. I'd have bought it to before the guy changed his mind. Yea..I traded this good engine for a 440 that turned out to be pure...

    383 vs 400

It's almost like a 340/360 debate only in the form of a big block  I have to stand up for the lowly 400. Yes, back in the day and in stock form, the 383 was a damn good engine. If you a rebuilding anyways, there is nothing wrong with a 400 whatsoever. Yes the compression is low but you...

Which plug wire set on your BB?

Here is the set I ordered, the MSD Heli Core set. Regulary $85 and on sale for $45. I hope I like them... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-3131/ The last set of Taylors I had did not fit very well and the ends came off of two wires within two days. I was kinda dissapointed...

Looking for a decent 8mm plug wire set that actually fits!! What are you guys using? (400)

    400 Block...what to look for?

Any 400 block will be ok. The overbore thing is a huge myth. Don't listen to anyone saying "get a different" motor. 400's have serious potential. My '65 Newport has one and it suprised me-even in that boat! It does have 452 heads and a Hughes camshaft though. Somewhere around the mid 70's...

    354 or 392? Hemi? Questions?

I started to put a 331 Hemi into a '74 road runner and wanted to ask the crew on Moparts what they thought. Well..that was a real sh*tfest. I got flamed and was basically told I was stupid for wanting to even attempt it. Whatever...I have never seen a road runner of that year with a 331 in it...

Slant Six to Big block Engine swap in a 74 dart sport.

I'd go with a low deck bb. Lighter weight and stronger in the mains. Can't beat a 451 stroker for the money IMO.

    Hp manifolds...any better?

It's a very stockish 400. *Hughes cam 470 lift with 214 at .050 duration+ matched valve springs. *Double roller timing set. *452 heads. *modified 600 Holley on a '68 383 intake. *High volume oil pump.
  26. D

    Hp manifolds...any better?

Not an a-body but I do have a 400 in my '65 Newport that has the stock exhaust manifolds. I also have some '72 or '73 hp manifolds that I could swap on but is it even worth doing?

Using a motor plate to mount the BB??

I want to see what these connect to on the unibody. I guess you can then chop off the motor mount provisions on the k frame because you won't need them anymore?? I also guess I could make a set of these cheap??
  28. D

    Low deck performer intake??

I can get a good deal on an Edelbrock Performer for a big block. Anybody here used one? I hear they are pretty decent.

    400 builds-anybody?? NON STROKER!

I am thinking about a build with closed chamber heads ('65 -383 heads w/larger valves) and a .030 overbore with a healthy cam. The 8.2 compression has gotta go!
