    CAM AND MAIN BEARINGS SHOT

Following are some answers to your questions and some additional info : When I first started this engine after the rebuild, I still had the oil pressure gauge hooked up. The oil pressure was fine and I immediately held the RPM between 2,000 and 2,500 for 3 ten minute cycles, as recommended by...

    CAM AND MAIN BEARINGS SHOT

I had a 340 short block rebuilt in 2018. I pulled the engine this winter because the rear main seal and the timing cover seal leaked and a bad lifter knocked occasionally, for a few minutes after startup. I thought I might as well get the cam lobes checked since I already had the 340 torn apart...

    1969 340 Engine Color

Sorry to beat a dead horse yet again. In 2015, I read countless posts on the 1969 340 engine color. The vast majority of them stated that the 1969 340 was painted turquoise, therefore, that’s what I painted my 340 in my 1969 Swinger. In addition, as I recall, the 1968 340s were painted red, the...

Michigan- Recommendations for Best Engine Builder

I live in Jackson Michigan. I had a bad experience with an engine builder/machine shop in the Detroit area and I need to get my 340 short block rebuilt again. Are there any recommendations for a quality and reputable engine builder and machine shop within a couple hours drive (maybe even in...

    340 CRANK?

On my other 2 stock 340 forged cranks - 1 has the notch in the flywheel flange, like the above picture shows, and the other one has no notch. Any ideas on why the difference? AJ/FormS- Do any of your forged cranks not have a notch? D.Dog- I bought this mostly complete 340 from a guy in...

    340 CRANK?

I have 2 other stock 340 forged crankshafts. They both have the casting number 2532457. So that is number I was looking for. Maybe this was produced on a Monday morning.

    340 CRANK?

I purchased a 340 dated December 1968. It appears to be completely stock and doesn't appear to have ever been apart. The pistons and rods have original casting numbers. But I can't find any casting number on the crank. The crank is a steel one and the first and last rod journals were drilled for...

    STARTER/FLYWHEEL QUESTION

I'm going to take this clutch and pressure plate to Detroit Clutch Masters to examine everything. They said that they can make sure the pressure plate is in spec and reusable. They also told me that they can sell me a Carbon/Kevlar clutch, which in their opinion, is the best clutch disc, even...

    STARTER/FLYWHEEL QUESTION

Thanks for all the thoughts AJ/FormS. All 4 of your excellent points do not apply in my case. I ordered a 10 1/2" McLeod clutch from a distributor. In their infinite wisdom I received a scalloped pressure plate that bolts to a 10 1/2" flywheel but holds an 11" clutch disc (I think I've also seen...

    STARTER/FLYWHEEL QUESTION

One starter was rebuilt a couple of years ago and I bought the other starter for $20 at the Mopar Nationals swap meet so I think it’s possible it was never rebuilt. I did try loosening the starters and retightening the bolts, but that didn’t help. And there are no helicoils in the B.H. I took...

    STARTER/FLYWHEEL QUESTION

I had my 340 rebuilt in my 69 Swinger. After 600 miles the clutch started grinding when the pedal was fully depressed. It turned out the Bell Housing was misaligned by .019” total and the clutch disc was hitting the flywheel bolts (the builder told me he aligned the BH as I requested). I should...

IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH 340 LIFTER BORES

Has anybody ever seen anything like these lifter bores? The engine is a 1969 340. I'm wondering if this was a really bad engine casting and if this block is junk. Thanks for any input.

    OEM Starter for 1969 340

Thanks guys for your advice. Here's the rest of the story: I did take a reman starter with the ears and had the local starter rebuild shop try to swap out the armatures but they told me they were slightly different diamenters. I ended up finding an NOS armature and took it back to the...

    OEM Starter for 1969 340

Does anybody know where I can buy a reman OEM starter for a 1969 Dart 340. I tried one from Autozone and looked at many pictures on the internet (Classic Industries etc) and all seem to have "ears" and bolts on the solenoid that hit the flange on my exhaust pipe where it bolts to the HP exhaust...

    Prime Engine Question

I am going to prime my 340 before I start it. I don't want to take my original valve covers off because I painted the engine with them on and I used RTV on the gaskets because the valve cover rails on the heads were not perfectly level. I think that each head receives oil in only 1 position...

Question for Owner of an Original 69 Swinger 340

I am having an alignment issue between my damper and water pump pulleys on a 69 Swinger 340. The width of the outside edge of the water pump pulley (at the V) measures 5/8". The damper pulley measures 3/4". So there is an 1/8" difference. Since there is no power steering or air conditioning...

Alignment Issue- water pump and damper pulleys

This 340 is dated late 1970 and is out of a 71 Duster along with the matching heads. Almost everything else are probably 1969 parts. This was in my 69 Dart Swinger which had manual steering, no power brakes and no air conditioning. The bolt pattern on the damper pulley is non symmetrical.

Alignment Issue- water pump and damper pulleys

Attached is a picture of the pulley misalignment. The oil slinger was installed. I don't have any other pulleys to examine. That Mancini Racing spacer is 1/8", whereas I need 1/16". So it would still be the same amount off. The water pump pulley is stamped 36713/8 and the outside edge...

Alignment Issue- water pump and damper pulleys

I reused the same cast iron water pump, the same timing chain cover and the same pulleys. The only thing different is the block and the damper.

Alignment Issue- water pump and damper pulleys

I had my 340 rebuilt. When installing the water pump and damper pulleys I noticed that the damper pulley is slightly closer to the block than is the water pump pulley. It's hard to tell but maybe 1/16" or more. I didn't notice if it was that way when I tore it apart. It's a different block...

    Valve Cover Gasket Sealing Issue

My valve covers are stock 1969 steel valve covers and are straight. The heads are 3418915 which were stock on a 340 dated 1970 (with 2.02 valves) and were originally installed in a 1971 Duster. One head had a O cast in it and the other a U. Probably none of this is relevant, but I thought I'd...

    Valve Cover Gasket Sealing Issue

The valve covers are not hitting the intake. I put a straight edge on both heads and both ends of the valve cover rails are lower than the center. I would have never thought that was possible. I think I will research which of the recommended gasket sets are the thickest and get those. I hate...

    Valve Cover Gasket Sealing Issue

On my 340, I replaced the heads with 1.88 valves with 1971 heads with 2.02 valves. I was going to use the Felpro cork gaskets from the gasket kit, but I noticed that both heads seem high in the center, so when I push on one end of the valve cover the other end has a gap. Has anybody else...

    Factory Appearing Paint Resto-1969 340

I am going to paint my 1969 Dart 340 the original turquoise. I know that...
