    Brass or Dacron transmission filter

If I remember correctly (and believe me , I'm an idiot !) , didn't Chrysler invent the Dacron transmission filtre ? Circa 1971 , me thinks ... What's this brass filtre you're speaking of here ? Sounds more like a screen than a filtre .

    904 Transmission Fluid Recommendation

Pepperidge Farms remembers . HA !! The old Slim Jims , RotoMatics , TurboGlides , etc. , are such obscurities. I actually saw a Slim Jim at one of the shops I deliver parts to ;it was pulled from a '60 Bonneville according to its owner . That's something I'd never even considered : superior...

    904 Transmission Fluid Recommendation

Okay , sounds right . Thanks for clarifying ! DexRon II was released in circa 1973 , after the ban on Sperm Whale Oil. I *believe* that Isuzu transmission were/ are Hydramatics , but I could (most likely) be wrong ... You learn something new every day (unless you're a hermit like myself) ...

    shift kit debate

That's good . Glad it's working out for you :glasses7: . I've heard mixed- results with their 'converters ; obviously you got a good one . I wish you continued luck with it . Trans-Go makes only top-notch stuff . I met Gil personally back in the 90's , at his shop in El Monte (Ca.) . It's not...

    904 Transmission Fluid Recommendation

I appreciate your accolades , thank you . I am , however , pretty dumb . Much of my (shared-knowledge) info is based solely upon foggy recollections and *educated* guesses . I've been using Type 'F' in all of my cars' TorqueFlites since the very late 80's when I first started driving . The...

    904 Transmission Fluid Recommendation

Those were 2-speed automatics , right ? Like I've said previously , DexRon used to be different ( ATF , Suffix 'A') prior to 1973 ; I'm certain that Honda didn't specify ATF , Suffix 'F' in their transmissions . Then there were the Toyo-Matics , which were based upon the PowerGlide design ...

    904 Transmission Fluid Recommendation

Hmm ... Let me squeeze some lighter fluid on this smoldering fire pit ... The A-604 was Chrysler's first , if not thee first , auto trans which had no bands ; it was all clutches . That alone would indicate the necessity of a unique trans fluid formula , henceforth "+3" , ad seq. "Type 'F'"...

    shift kit debate

Another vote for Trans-Go here . "Gil" , the founder of Trans-Go , engineers his kits for the individual manufacture's transmissions ( 904 , 727 ; TH 400 , TH 350 ; C4 , C6 , FMX , ... ) instead of simply basing his kits on the Turbo Hydro design as everyone else does . TorqueFlites are very...

    trans fluid

I've always used Type 'F' in my cars' T-Flites . +4 (plus 4) trans fluid is , in my opinion , overkill in the old 3-speed auto's .

need help with leaky trans pan

Good call on the use of the A-500 (et seq.) pan and retainers , plus the new , reusable gasket . I've always wondered about just that conversion . I see those new-style filtre / gasket kits at work all of the time . I recognise that the new-style filtre won't work --but it looks damned close-- ...

need help with leaky trans pan

How's the machined surface where the pan and its gasket rests ? Maybe it's chipped or cracked ? Also , you are checking the fluid level with the car idling , in neutral , at operating temperature , on a level surface , right ? Maybe the pan's overfilled ...

    TCI 904 Sizzler ?????

Even the FoMoCo and General Motors enthusiasts have had a lot of bad luck and trouble with Taiwan Crap Incorporated . I was researching the Ford 5R55 series 5 speed auto trans (a trouble-prone trans ; solenoids crap out and the servo piston's bore wears oblong and snaps the bands) , and I saw on...

    7 3/4" and 8 1/4" rear weaknesses? (and other ?'s)

The 7.25" rear is junk , even behind a 170 Slant Six / 904 combo , with an old lady driving . Both cars I've driven with that stupid waste of metal were : 1. ) 1972 Swinger 318/904 . I bought it when it was 17 years old ; and , its prior (original) owner kept-up with all services (showed me...

904 shift kit for road racing

My good friend Marc Maksimow runs Lemons ("Cheetohs") ! Fun stuff :D . You're right-on track with choosing Trans-Go ! They make the BEST shift kits / reprogrammers , bar none .

    TCI Transmission is bad

I've heard nothing but bad things about TCI ( Taiwanese Chinese Internals , Total Crap Inside ) . I'm interested in seeing how long it'll be before Ehrenberg over at Mopar Action has problems --- BIG problems --- with that TCI 6 speed auto that he put in his '69 Road Runner ... ( lots of...

    Dex 6?

It'd be like filling the tank of a 8.2:1 comp ratio motor with 118 octane racing gas : no harm , but total overkill . I use Type 'F' ; B&M 'Trick-Shift' is modified Type 'F' and works well ; Lucas 'Sure Shift' is good as well . Plus 3 , Plus 4 , Merc V and Dex VI are meant for overdrive...

    Automatic Transmission Fluid

Type-F ( 904 with a Trans-Go TF-1 ) The one that gets me is seeing these cheap *** shops that use DEXIII-MERC in new(er) transmissions :cwm10: . They must like rebuilding transmissions or something ! One dumb *** shop in particular filled a 518 with DEXIII . I told 'em that they'll be doing...

    Getting Transmission Rebuilt

    I'd recommend the following : -Trans-Go shift-improver ; -Extra-capacity oil pan , with drain plug ; -Either Type-F fluid or Lucas Sure-Shift *Optional* Low Gear-set ( 999 trans ) I always recommend -- indeed assert -- the need for a Trans-Go kit , for the simple reason that their kits /...

    1956 "A-466" T-Flite Training Book !

Interesting find here ... a link-to the site of an Upload of an original , 1956 Factory Training Book for the then-new "A-466" TorqueFlite ! From what I've gathered , it appears that the engineering designation catalogue number changed to "A-488" for 1958 , following some internal upgrades ...

    "mild" Shift kit?

    I agree 100% with my fellow members whom have opined before me : Trans-Go all-the way ! The other manufactures' shift kits are designed around a Turbo 350 / 400 - based kit ; no go in a TorqueFlite ( or C4 , or C6 , or FMX , or Borg-Warner , or ... ) . btw : They must LOVE you in Humboldt ! I...

What automatic transmission came in a 1974 duster 318

    most-likely it's an A-904-LA . My '73 Duster 318 had a factory-upgrade A-727-A ( no 904's available when the car was being built , so a 727 was used instead ) . After nearly 40 years , it is possible that your Duster's got any variation of the 904 or 727 ; may be a 998 , 999 , 904 or 727 .

What would be the best rear end?

I agree completely with caferacerx ; the 8.25" rear is just fine . One of its advantages is that it's already got the big bolt-circle pattern ( or , at least , the majority of them do ... ) , so there's no need to wrestle with spending coin on buying new axles . Another often overlooked...

    a500 ?

I'd advise against the use of the A-500 , especially when it's going behind a nice , torquey motor like a 360 . They have that beautiful lockup converter ( and , last time I checked , no one makes higher-stall converters for them ) ; and they were only available behind the 239 ( 3.9 Litre ) V6...

    Spool vs. Biscuit Mount

I'm chronologically 40 as well ; I'll be 41 in April . I feel like I've got the body of an 80 year old , with the ability to be both 5 and 50 mentally . Speaking of "progeria" problems : I'm going in at 10:30 today for some more numbing injections from my pain management specialist . At the...

    Spool vs. Biscuit Mount

I'm planning to remove the cross member and put it on the bench . That'll be difficult enough of a task for me , as I have arthritis . Laying on my back working under a car is a daunting task ; even a 'simple' oil change is a ***** most times !

    Spool vs. Biscuit Mount

    Spool vs. Biscuit Mount

This inquiry is in regard to my 1972 Coronet , but should be generic to all vintage MoPars : The trans mount is junk in my Coronet . It was replaced 3 years ago --- for free --- when the trans was rebuilt ( 904-LA ) ; it is now trash . Since I want to avoid buying the garbage mounts that parts...
