the only thing that is holding me back from finishing my car is the torque converter and transmission lines but do not know what tranny came in my year. it is a 1974 duster 318 california special automatic

most-likely it's an A-904-LA .
My '73 Duster 318 had a factory-upgrade A-727-A ( no 904's available when the car was being built , so a 727 was used instead ) .
After nearly 40 years , it is possible that your Duster's got any variation of the 904 or 727 ; may be a 998 , 999 , 904 or 727 .

Well I don't know about the "california special automatic" but I have a 1974 duster and It did come with a 318 and 904, I was told at the time when I had my 360 installed that the 904's were junk, boy was that a bunch of crap, anyway I would bet you have a 904, and if you have a 318 you don't need a weighted (externaly balanced) convertor either. I have a Mancini Tq conv in mine, but I have a 727 now.

Do you have a transmission now? It could have COME with either. The 904 can be identified by basically a square pan with one corner knocked off. The 727 has a kick out in the pan on the passenger's side at the front of the pan.
