    Runs and shuts off

You forgot to mention anything about checking the air system! :toothy10: In all seriousness, though, you gave great advice. No sense in throwing parts at it. Too often that happens and it turns into a wallet killer!

What the H#!! is this noise? Slant six mystery engine sound...

I'm not gonna hold onto his comment or anything...it just got frustrating to keep coming back to this thread and finding endless reminders suggesting the alternator as the culprit. In the case of StrokerScamp's comment, it's just tough to make the call on someone's intended tone via typed words...

What the H#!! is this noise? Slant six mystery engine sound...

Well, all jokes and sarcasm aside, your asinine comment tells me you apparently overlooked my other notable comment about the alternator. I did spin it by hand while I had the belts off, and while it isn't the same as the mechanical load provided by the belt from the crankshaft, I found no...

What the H#!! is this noise? Slant six mystery engine sound...

Chas-I forgot to mention that I did start the car with the belts off. I didn't hear the noise, but I'm not entirely surprised since it is intermittent. While I did have the belts off, though, I hand spun the alternator and found no play in the bearing. Same as the alternator, Lawrence, I found...

What the H#!! is this noise? Slant six mystery engine sound...

Well, I took the belts off and spun the alternator. There wasn't any perceivable play in the pulley, so I'm still thinking that's good. Were there any markings on the dipstick to indicate this? I'm not really sure what to make of that possibility since my dipstick looks good. I'm running an...

What the H#!! is this noise? Slant six mystery engine sound...

The noise doesn't seem to be RPM-based to my memory. As far as bolts go, I'll check the tightness on all the pulley, fan, etc. bolts tomorrow. Oil level is good, too. I've run it a little low from burning oil before, so I keep better track nowadays. I have a mechanic's stethoscope and I've...

What the H#!! is this noise? Slant six mystery engine sound...

My car makes this noise intermittently on start-up, and I'm not exactly sure what to make of it. Timing chain? Ideas welcomed. Motor is stock with 66k miles on it. I just uploaded the video to YouTube, so it might not be visible yet. Be patient with me 8) YouTube- Slant Six (/6) Mystery Engine...

    overcarb'ed super six??

I second this remark about questionable factory-delivered condition of Barry Grant carbs. The thing I heard, though, had to do with ensuring that the float level on the carb is dead-on. Maybe give the thing a once over just to be sure it is set up well.

Help setting valves on a 225

Whoa, Dan, both you and 64SignetConv presented interesting info about two different opinions on valve-adjustment theory. Both of you offered interesting info, but only you managed to serve up a bunch of attitude. Maybe reconsider your opinion delivery (regardless of who's correct), because the...

/6 no start, has fuel. Walk me through trackdown process?

Buy a switch and lock cylinder from RockAuto.com or somewhere [cheapish] like them and it'll come with keys. I need to do mine pretty quick here as well and that's where my parts will be coming from...

    What the **** is this?

Man, I thought I was going to one up you as I was reading this thread by saying I found a beautiful, unrusted 1/4"-20 x 1" bolt in the oil pan of an International Scout last winter! But after I read this I realized I was short by a couple of ridiculous items...

    PowerPipe Exhaust for slant/6

I just found this thread a couple of days ago, but your most recent design incarnation looks promising! I'll be continuing to watch this thread in the coming days and weeks for performance numbers and price info!
