How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

I believe, aside from it being a gouge which you imply it isn't, that the concern is the sharp corner edge of the scratch. Sharp edges are more prone to detonate, so eliminating them by light polish/sand should fix that problem. It sounds like you didn't damage the ring lands on the side, so...

    Engine Rebuilding Lessons?

Reading a book is good, but hands on with someone who knows what they are doing, and able to explain and answer questions is great. Having a mentor that can offer their expertise and expensive equipment at a later date for a nominal fee is priceless. I could only dream of having an opportunity...

Got my machine shop invoice today.

At first I thought that total was for just the parts, which around here would be a good deal. I'd think I got free machining, free assembly, and free break-in. As well as a free head porting.. In other words, a "smokin" deal Mr. Dilinger. Grant

    318 shortblock, 360 heads...?

Did some searching and came up with this ad for an AutoMex 67 Barracuda. It has no markers, and 67 lower moulding vs. spears. Almost looks like ablackout paint was applied to lower panels, although that could simply be the picture. Grant

    318 shortblock, 360 heads...?

Having found other pics of your car on the web, my guess is that although it is a 67 Automex Barracuda, there have been changes from the original that might have been done. The pics show the 68 US mandated marker lights (round) on the fender and quarter panels. Pictures of other Mexican cars in...

Stuttering at 1500rpm, then fine...ignition or fuel?

Not a carb expert, but it does sound as if it is pulling gas out of one of the idle or off-idle ports when at that particular RPM/vacuum. Like berlins said, watch for fuel purts down the bowl when at that range Grant

    total timing

Don't worry.. I'll find out and post up. I'm pretty sure it's something they are either selling now or will be. And on a side note, since our Postal strike is over, I will send out that DVD :) Grant

    total timing

Very timely topic. A couple of memebers in our local club have manufactured a device which can be put in the distributor to allow you to easily adjust your advance without having to weld and file the slots. One of them did a write up about it in the latest club newsletter, and it looks like an...

satellite engine in a duster, advice?

I dont think thats what everyone means. What they are saying is that if you use a car 318 from a b-body like a Satellite, and grab it complete, there is no real difference than if you used one from an a-body. Sure, exhaust manifolds (for sure the driver side) are different, and if you were...

    Cleaning carbon from pistons

I only did that once on an old slant. I was concerned about getting debris along the ring lands, so I used a small ribbon of plasticine around the tops of the piston. Was it neccessary? Probably not. Was it smart? Probably notter.. Grant
