    1977 904 horsepower limits?

I have worked on a couple of 904s and now have a 1984 # 999 trans listed for a non lockup hi altitude 318. I pulled it apart today. It is a BRAND NEW old stock trans right from dodge, factory tag, caps and plugs still on it. 34 years of storage put a touch of rust on a couple of clutch...

    518 od unit behind a 500?

Since i don't have either trans, that would give me options to put an OD trans together.

    Need 904 assembly help!

Bob, thanks for the suggestions. Last night(!) I put it together again without the output washer, and it works. So , I will make a custom washer maybe .040 ,which will give me an extra .028, which might make it. If not, an extra gasket in the tail shaft area will get me another .010.

I have been doing it in my sleep for days

    Need 904 assembly help!

Well, I thought I had it done, but not so fast! When I torque the pump housing bolts, the rotating assembly locks up. I must not have had the pump seated all the way when I thought I had it together with plenty of clearance. I have a .068 output thrust washer, and two .064 thrust washers, one...

    Need 904 assembly help!

UPDATE! I woke up and couldn't sleep, so I went out to the shop at 12:30 AM and tore into the tranny. I pulled it apart, removing everything but the output shaft. I checked everything and didn't find any of the components out of whack. Put it back together, dropped the pump in sans rubber o ring...

    Need 904 assembly help!

Well, the siege continues! I figured out the output shaft and gear train so I wound up with .011 lash, in spec. BUTTTT, (!!) when I went to put the roller bearing on the tail shaft, I couldn't find matching snap rings for securing the bearing. I had one that was the same thickness as the groves...

    Interchanging 904's

I will never rebuild another trans unless I can verify it ran when I got it! The o n e I am finishing up has been a special challenge!

    Need 904 assembly help!

Got the gear train together with .011 clearance, and notice that the only thing keeping the gear train from moving forward about a 1/16th inch will be the thrust washer between the input and output shafts, plus the roller bearing in the tail shaft. I assume that is normal and I didn't miss any...

1966 A904 loses all gears overnight

For those following this, I blew a direct drum lip seal in -25 degree winter temps once. No gears at all because there is no connection at all to the output shaft. An air pressure check(35 psi) per repair manual will find this, and can save you from pulling the whole trans possibly.

    TF904 Transbrake recommendation

The converter also needs to have Fins strengthened to handle any possible cavitation. I had a ten inch setup for transbrake use by TCI that wasn't done right, and looks like a gorilla with a big ballpeen hammer beat all the fins to death, I kid you not! They charged me $500 ( in 2000) and...

    Interchanging 904's

I ran into different snap ring diameters, tail shaft bearing I d different , some seal size changes, all between 1970 to 1972 904s. Be certain you measure everything, as there may be shaft diameter changes as little as .050! If you order rebuild kits, thrust washers, etc be sure to order by...

    Need 904 assembly help!

I have both books, thanks. Will check the links. I just found a clear blow up of the gear train . Thanks for the link to the manuals!! I have one too many thrust washers. None needed between the rear annulus gear and rear planetary !

    Need 904 assembly help!

I have a 1972 904 serial pk35xxxxxxxxxx. I am a bit confused about what thrust plates and washers go where. I assume there are no thrust plates or washers behind the rear annulus gear? Inside the rear annulus one diagram shows a thrust plate, but I don't remember there being one there, and...

    42rh strengh? Mods?

JBC, the 42rh would be more budget friendly for me, as I can do my own tranny work. Precision also makes a multi disc lockup converter for the A500, and a spacer to make room for it as it is a thicker converter. Sounds like I have good options, just need to learn more about valve body mods, max...

    42rh strengh? Mods?

As far as the limits of the 904/42rh go, from what I understand I wouldn't want to push one over about 500+ to 600 ft lbs of torque. Torque is what will kill them. Boasted motors have a BUNCH of torque.

    42rh strengh? Mods?

I am interested in moving to an OD 42rh trans to help drop rpm some with 3.55 gears. This 65 Dart is getting a 360 Magnum in the spring, and eventually a 392 Gen III Hemi down the road when funds permit. I have a 904 lockup (998 or 999?) that is available for parts scavenging. I am not...
