    Doug's headers and mini-starters

When I swapped from a 6 to V8 in my 65 Barracuda 4 speed, I reused the stock 6 starter for several years and replaced it with a mini when it finally crapped out.

Why are there so few blown small blocks?

Sure wish someone would come up with that for the LA motors for a less expensive header that would fit.

Soak those puppies with pretty much any penetrate over several days, then a little heat. I'll bet the nuts come right off.

rear main seal replacement 73 Dart 318 V8

Any auto parts store can get a seal. NAPA might have a better quality seal. I usually use Oreilly or Auto Zone. Mostly Chinese stuff.

Trying for hours now... 65 Valiant left exhaust manifold problem

Disconnect the steering column from the steering.box. you may also have to remove the valve covers to give you a little more room. Just went through this last week on a 65 Barracuda.

I've had brand new gaskets that came out of a kit fail in just a few hours. Get new and get quality.

1965 273 commando solid cam lash specs ?

My 1st 273 had headers and wound to 7k on a regular basis. I busted 1 pushrod in 3 years and always adjusted my lifters to 13 and 21 hot and running. Messy but accurate. The one I just built doesn't seem to want to rev as high with the stock manifolds.

    Rocker shaft bolts

I found a set of bolts and dividers from Mancini Racing for $30.00 delivered. Thanks guys. I'll be sure to limit the torque to 18 on the new ones.

    Rocker shaft bolts

Any other people here have a problem shearing rocker shaft bolts when torquing to 30 #'s? I've busted a few of them and I know the torque wrench is accurate. Also need a source for some new ones at a reasonable price.

    Viton seals

I built a 273 and the guy who did my heads installed new valve guides, new valves, new springs and cut the valve bosses for Viton seals. It only has a few thousand miles and smokes when I let off the gas. I pulled the plugs and it looks like 3 cylinders on the right bank and 1 on the left are...

    273 Cam Shaft Wear?

I used Camcraft to grind a cam for me. He can grind any spec you give hime or tell him what kind of driving you do and let him do his thing. My cam works great and he sent new lifters for under $200.

tryin to break in new engine, ruff idle

I would bump the gap up to .045. You can always coose it up incrementally if necessary. All the new electronic cars call for a wider gap. Allows the coil to build more voltage to jump the air gap. When you choke the motor you are actually enrichening the fuel mix. How have the plugs been...

tryin to break in new engine, ruff idle

A couple of things I noticed as I went through this thread: 1) Are your new wires copper? That is a no-no with a lot of electronic ignitions. 2) Is your fuel pump old. Older pump diaphragms are not meant for the new crap gas and disintegrate. You may be getting crap in your filter and impeding...

    pilot bushing??

I had the same problem and actually got the last smaller diameter bushing in NAPA inventory. Even still, I had to use my Dremel to burnish the bushing. The problem was the crank was originally set up for an automatic and the hole was never finished off to accept the stock bushing. I've never...

I store my unused engine on a moving dolly. Cheap and rolls easily.

    edelbrock carb tuning?

I don't mean to hijack SirDan's thread but I have basicly the same problem with a 273 I built. Lowcompression pistons, .030 over, mild solid lifter cam. I have a new 1406 and it dies at about 2500 rpm until about 3000 rpm. Tried changing springs and it didn't help. 18" of vacuum @ idle.

    Synthetic oils

Lots of talk out there about Mobil 1. I used to use it in all my vehicles and my Harley until 2002 when I blew the lower end on my 27,000 mile Harley on a road trip. Mobil would do nothig for me even though they had an oil nsample that showed wear. They said it was acceptable. I did some...

Well folks, it was the head gasket. If I could ever figure how to post pics, I'd put them on here. Thanks for all the help and opinions.

    New engine blowby

Don't have to do a leak down -- with blow by and "0" compression in #8, I know where my problem is. I just won't know exactly what the cause of the problem is until I pull the head. "moper" -- I know I didn't miss a ring because there were no parts left and this problem didn't occur until I had...

    New engine blowby

Well, I did a compression check today and had 110 -120 lbs on all cylinders except #8. It has "0". Even after squirting some oil in the cylinder there is not even a quiver on the needle. I do feel a little tug on the intake stroke when I put my finger over the hole but nothing in the compression...

    New engine blowby

I recently rebuilt a 273 and had a multitude of problems with carburetion and timing. I finally got it to run and fixed my timing issue with a new distributor. I ran it at about 2500 rpm for about 30 mins to break in the cam and drove it about 40 miles, with 18" flexpipe on the stock manifolds...

    New engine problems

We changed the carb to a 4 bbl and timed it by ear as the timing mark is on the mark static but the engine seems to like a whole lot more advance than 5 degrees. It starts and runs just fine. I've still got to put a new boot and universals on the driveshaft before taking it out for a drive. I...

    New engine problems

I have the early timing cover with the separate timing tab. That's a neat little tool you made but I don't see the need. If my timing mark is at TDC on the tab and the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug on the distributor then al my mechanicals are in order. I'm wondering of the early motor just...

    New engine problems

OK guys, I'm looking for some ideas. I just rebuilt a 65 273. It has a mild Camcraft cam with solid lifters, all new mild performance springs, new stock valves etc. It's been changed over to an electronic ignition. I have a D4B manifold with an adapter for a 2 bbl as that's all I have to play...
