My slant six had 276 gears, so I imagine the 318 had something similar or lower. It probably had a 904 transmission too. I would Google ''1971 Plymouth Scamp 318 cu in, 904 trans, which rear end gears.'' or even ''1971 Scamp gears'' or something to that effect.

That looks like a motor home 727 you have there...the long tail shaft type.

You would have more choices if you had an 8.25. It handles more power too.

Sorry to say but my buddy with the 750 flywheel HP blown 340 Demon has been running his with a 8 3/4 rear end for 13 years and no problems and that is with sticky street tires...he is not the easiest guy on the gas pedal.

It's a hell of a lot more than a 7 1/4 (250 HP) and the 8 1/4 (450 HP) 8 3/4 (750 plus). Those are the figures I have and they are supposedly right but any nut can break a 350 HP rear end with a stuck truck and have only 150 HP.

If you change rear ends you will have to shorten your drive shaft...at least I had to.

Depending if you have or it has a heavy duty suspension. The lenght should be the same, the only difference could be the ply count. To change from a regular suspension to HD just add another ply...usually a long one and goes under the main ply. I had mine redone 2 years ago that is why I know.

A 10 bolt 7 1/4 rear, I wonder if the rear is not one from an old Dodge 1/2 ton, one never knows!!! All 76 /6 came with a 7 1/4, so I think 75s were alike unless they were specially ordered.

Once you go sure grip you will never go back...go for it!

And if you intend on racing then make sure the 904 is built to take the abuse. When built right these trannys are marvelous.
