    Rear main seal lesson

Tks for your replies guys. As I said, many engines built over the yrs with both rope & rubber seals without problems. As ply65 said I usually only put a small dab on ends of seal but must have been overindulging that nite or simply distracted to put that much sealant in there. At least it...

    Rear main seal lesson

Never had a problem with rear main seal leaks until new 512ci stroker build. Everything went per "text book" during break-in except minor but anoying oil leaks. Cometics valve cover gaskets solved half the problem but two tries at rear seal area didn't help. Finally decided to bite the bullet...

    Pulley Troubles....

I've always used the March aluminum pulleys top & bottom on a MP water pump with both left & right outlet housings from 440source. March may be a little spendy for some but worth every penny especially when the uppers come with special button head allen screws for pump mounting that allow the...

Why use a passenger side water pump housing?

I'm happy with my 512ci stroker with right hand lower hose but timing is difficult with shroud unless you fab a left side tab.

Bad head for my 512 stroker

This "big cube" (507) is still in assembly rack. No vehicle yet. Head looks excellent after repair. Really pays off having a senior machinist that knows the process. Need a few more items to button this one up. Getting close. My non-precision cc procedure is using a large syringe, not a burette...

Bad head for my 512 stroker

My machinist is trying the seat replacement first. The 3462346 castings came in two sizes, 79.5cc & 81.5cc, however you can reduce the volume even more with flat valves rather than tulip but with a weight penalty. My reference to "small chamber" may have been misleading. Nothing compares to the...

Bad head for my 512 stroker

Short block is done. Heads are done, well I thought so. Cleaned, maged, ported, gasket matched, polished, hard exhaust seats, milled to cleanup, paint, & freeze plugs. While lapping valves I found small dot in #2 intake seat so back to machinist (I do most my work). Each time we touched it, it...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

Wow! First time I have heard that. I cut may templates on the lines and carefully sanded the line away just to ensure they weren't too large. Way back then I felt it better to go with slightly less flow rather than trash a set of heads. I can see if you don't orientate them carefully you could...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

As far as this thread goes, it's all good input & I appreciate it. My first rebuild was a Lawson 1cyl ditch pump at age of 13. A "take home" from the oil fields in Long Beach, Ca. After numerous flat head port & relieve jobs I started enhancing Mopars & discovered the power of a Hemi. 60yrs...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

re:ir3333 No specific reason other than I still have two 72' (eastern) 400ci blocks w/under .030 wear but have already done that a couple of times. The 440ci has been patiently waiting for my attention while I watched the kit cost go up more than $500. The 512ci kit is most reasonable without...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

re:IQ52 If I could get anywhere near 600hp with this combo I will be elated, over 700hp would be only a dream. re:roccodart440 I've considered the Comp version @ .509, 284/284, 114LC due to availability & complete package price. I've never used their products but heard good & bad. Calculations...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

As I said "it's what I got" & I'll let the next owner do the upgrades ie- aluminum heads, FITEC, MPI. Sorry to hear of your bad luck w/purple sticks, I've used them on all my SB, B, RB builds except the slanty without problems. Although, admittedly, most were years ago and quality has taken a...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

We were active competitors from 64' thru 69' as Perkins & Sons Racing. We were members of Gear Grinders with turbocharged 170ci slanty in Blown Coupe & Sedan & I was also member of Rod Riders in 68' with baby hemi in Blown Fuel Coupe. Yeah, 200mph with less than 300ci is a daunting task w/...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

I appreciate the input from all. This is an "old school" build using a 78' motorhome 440 I've had in storage for 25yrs. Finally getting started after two other stroker builds, first one was a Speed-O-motive 451ci done 22yrs ago. Sticking with iron except for TM-7 intake, Dart adapter, & 1050cfm...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

Thanks for input. Decision was made long ago. My racing days are long gone. This is a "Coffee Cruiser" & I probably should have said that originally. My question still "is there a benefit to the additional flow holes along the bottom edge of the late head". I expect both sets can be made to...

It begins again - 512 Stroker

Ordered my 440-512-5075 kit today. Need to make decision on heads. Early 70's 3462346 casting (right in pic) will need new guides installed or Late 78' 4006452 casting (left in pic) will need hardened exhaust seats installed. Both have 81.5cc chambers & will be ported using DC P4120437 plastic...

    Old School - New Build

I love the throttle response. may be tough to hang onto on the streets. All scrap material base from 50ton machinery pallet. "reclaim, re-purpose, reuse". Universal for my turbo slantys, 340's, & now big boy's. Really need to find vehicle.

    Old School - New Build

Finally finished assembly of 80's Speed-O-motive 451 low deck stroker. A few changes along the way but happy with results so far. Still looking for just the right vehicle & being very particular. Thought mid-70's D100 but thinking Dakota w/full fab chassis. Not very street-able but fun regardless.

    What blocks do I have

Also, the 440 block I was comparing to was bored .040 + .005-007 ware so is very close to the "B" block measurements.

    What blocks do I have

Got it! Sorry for the confusion. Got a snap gauge which is easier than an inside mic and everything is "good in WHO land". Block reads .020 - .027 oversize with .005-.007 taper. I'll shoot for .040 oversize which should allow enough meat for a clean cut. I like the idea of a 500ci kit but will...

    What blocks do I have

I bought these many years ago off an engine rack at a wrecking yard that was closing. They were both complete (one dodge, one ply) with tags that indicated less than 90k miles. He didn't remember how long they had been in the rack but was many years. I broke them down right away and was happy...

    What blocks do I have

Thanks for the comment Jim. That was my first "reason check". I have a good set of Starrett inside and outside mics. Ultimately I dug out the 440 block and set it next to the "B" blocks and all three measure 4.320 +/- a few thousands. I have carefully examined both blocks to detect if there are...

    What blocks do I have

I've built my share of small mopars and started to check my "B" blocks I hoarded for years to finally get working on my first stroker. I have 2 early 70's that both mic @ 4.320+/- which is the bore for the 440 "RB", these should be 4.340 minimum. The markings are: casting- #3614230-6 dc-...
