    8 3/4 seals and bearings

If your looking to upgrade to large bolt pattern (if the one you bought is small bolt pattern) Dr Diff has good deals on new axles with the green bearings pressed in....I bought a set for my 8 3/4 and he's a treasure trove of information, great to deal with

    741 case

I read it as $800 for the 8 3/4 axle/diff. Anyways, a 741 (assuming in good condition) will be fine. I scored an almost new (little used) 741 suregrip carrier with 3.55 gears for $400 over here. The axle housing (with a 489 open carrier) itself cost me $200. I'm surprised you pay that much over...

    Mopar 8 3/4 or Ford 9?

Yes, in fact the 9 inch diff has a smaller pinion diameter pinion shaft than a 741 carrier, the weakest of the 8 3/4 carriers. What saves the 9 inch is an additional pinion shaft support bearing. I'm surprised to hear so many guys over there extolling the virues of the 9 inch over the mopar 8...

    Green bearings and inner seals

Thanks fellas, and particularly Terry, for your input. The housing ends are in good nick, shouldnt present any immediate leakage problems, so I'll install and see how it goes.

    Green bearings and inner seals

Yes Terry the bearings have an O ring. I pushed one of the axles into the housing a little and it seems it would be quite a tight seal as is. I know you get a little added insurance with an inner seal but I may as well install and be damned ... or suffer a leak down the road that is. But if...

    Green bearings and inner seals

Thanks Terry, but I dont have the old seals. I've got so much going on at the moment that I just dont want the added hassle of sourcing new seals unless I really need them.

    Green bearings and inner seals

I'm about to install new axles in my shortened 8 3/4 housing. The axles have the Green bearings installed. Notwithstanding the Green bearings are already seald I know that some still use the inner seals with them for added insurance against leaks (Dr. Diff suggested I do the same), but I dont...

    Driveshaft - 904 to A833 and 8 3/4

My cuda originally had a 904 with a 7 1/4 differential. I've changed to an A833 with an 8 3/4. Will my original driveshaft interchange with this new combo, length wise?

    8 3/4 axle shaft seals

Wow, that's a big drop Dave, 3.5s to 2.7s....I'm curious as to why you say 3.55 is not very streetable? You'd rev around 3000 at 65-70 mph, right? I've just purchsed a 741 suregrip with 3.55 gears to replace 3.23 gears in a 489 carrier, and I would have thought 3.55 was the perfect compromise...

    C body axles

The ones to use are C and B body wagon axles, (70-73 C, 71-73 B) they're the longest at 31 12/64" and thus suited to cutting and re-splining for stock A body length. I know this because I just went through the same thing, but ended up buying new A body axles from Dr Diff.

Donor axle for 8 3/4 - will this work?

Yes, I considered narrowing the housing more, but it would place my wheels (4.5 inch backspacing) way too far inwards and require moving the springs inboard of the sub frames. Would also affect handling significantly given the track would be narrowed.

Donor axle for 8 3/4 - will this work?

Thanks Tony, I checked out that link. I'm .5" short according to the diagram which stipulates 26" from bearing flange to tapered area. Back to the drawing board!

Donor axle for 8 3/4 - will this work?

Thanks Geof, that gives me hope! And yes we have various shops here that can do the shortening and re-splining so that wont be a problem. I am wondering though whether the axles that I need are actually the longer B and C body wagon axles (31 21/64") ....I've read that somewhere else but cant...

Donor axle for 8 3/4 - will this work?

I have an 8 3/4, 489 carrier, out of a Dodge Phoenix here in Australia (ie. in USA basically a 4 door Plymouth Fury). The set-up is of course way too long for my 68 cuda so I am having the housing shortened to A Body length. The existing axles I have with the 8 3/4 measure approx. 30 3/4" from...

    confused about this sure-grip

No your shock mount plates will be different. Unless I am mistaken, your 7 1/4 has 2.5 inch axle tubes, your 8 3/4 has 3 inch tubes. Therefore, holes for U bolts will be different spacing on your chaock mount plate. You need new U bolts too.

    8 3/4 dimensions

well the existing diff is not an 8 3/4, just needed to know the correct width for an A body 8 3/4 to ascertain how much I will need to shorten the non-A body 489 unit I now have. OK, I'll answer my own question in case somebody else needs to know. After much searching I found this info on...

    8 3/4 dimensions

I've just scored an 8 3/4 differential, 489 carrier. I will need to have the axles shortened for it to fit my 68 cuda. I'm trying to work out whether stock axle lengths will fo it for me, with the wheels and tires I have, or whether I will need to go to some other custom length. Question is -...

    3.23 vs. 3.55

redfish, can you elaborate on this? I'm a differential dunce and I've just picked up an 8 3/4 over here in Australia (they are extremely rare here), 489 carrier, cone type sure grip, 3.23 gears. The axles and housings will need to be shortened to fit my 68 cuda. Im running tall tires (275/60 x...
