Standards of beauty certainly are ephemeral

Here's a picture of the Dodge Brothers breaking ground for their new factory in, I think, 1910. Look at those tummies! I am told that people back then thought a fat stomach was attractive because it showed that the person had plenty to eat and was therefore financially successful. I have...

The dog food that had everything going for it except that dogs didn't like it

It sure is wonderful that GM is such a sustainable company: General Motors Releases Annual Sustainability Report, Setting Baseline for Accelerated Goals (gm.com) It's just too bad that its products suck. Except for its products, it would be a great company.

I think the loss of respect is mutual

I can't believe that apparently the site administrator or one of the moderators won't let me reply any further to the Leanna charity thread. I was just trying to give her some good advice. You guys are way too emotionally invested in defending her. It is wonderful to be cancelled by you...

The business model of the independent tire stores!

There are 2 independent tire stores in my town. When you get a flat tire and take it there to be repaired, of course you expect to pay for it, but they always say "it's on the house". Sure is nice of them, right? Last year I bought six 16.5" Firestone Transforce tires for my dually from...

Off topic: I sorta learned how to install a new VW or Porsche floor pan

I had the great opportunity of watching a skilled metal man install a new floor pan in my Porsche 356 the other day. There is definitely a trick to it because you're installing it in a different sequence than the factory did. Replacement VW/Porsche floor pans are sold in two pieces: front and...

Anybody remember why GM recalled the early 327 V8 to replace this pistons?

I know that many of you don't go back this far, but in the Spring of 1962 my father bought a '62 Chevrolet Impala with the (then) new 327 engine. A few weeks later, the local dealer contacted my dad to ask him to bring the car in to have its pistons replaced. Something was wrong with the...

Opposing the law preventing sale of gasoline cars in California

I have heard the news reports about our wonderful governor, Gavin Newsom, proposing to outlaw the sale of new gasoline vehicles in my state. I would like to learn more about this, and quite possibly join and support any organization that will be fighting such a law. Can anybody provide any...

What make and model of car is this?

Hey guys, I have a judgment against the fellow who owns this car, and am trying to decide if it would be financially viable to levy on it to satisfy the judgment. Although I have seen cars like this on the road, for the life of me I can't remember what make and model it is! Could any of you...

Do your own heat pump HVAC work?

(If there is a previous thread on this, please point me there.) Has it ever occurred to you that it is just too damned expensive to keep your modern, complicated house HVAC heat pump system working, and you would like to do your own repairs? I would even like to be able to perform a DIY...

Why did the exhaust pipe on the Ford Y-block V8 cross over in front of the engine?

I never did figure this out. Anyone?

Our biggest local car show failed

Once a year, during the county fair, our town would have a car show at the county fairgrounds. Up until a few years ago, the fair directors would make sure to have qualified car judges decide which cars got prizes. Then for some reason they started using the "people's choice" method of award...

That last layer of dirt is the hardest to remove!

My engine finally got so dirty that I had to clean it. I'm using brushes and mineral spirits, and have found that although the top layers of dirt and grease dissolve OK, there is often one last layer that is very difficult to remove without scraping or blasting. Any suggestions? Thanks!

GM to spend $1 billion of its bailout money to redesign its large trucks

I was just wondering what you thought about GM's announcement today. It seems really stupid to me. They nearly went bankrupt, and had to be bailed out, because they had no small cars to sell. But rather than developing small cars, they're going to invest a big chunk of the money in big vehicles...

Oh, My God! I Think I've Got Mercedes-Benz Fever!

I've been a good Mopar fan all my life, but watch out. Here's how the M-B Fever starts: first, your son's friends start buying up old Mercedes cheap and fixing them up, and you notice how nicely they are made, and what a quality piece they are (I'm talking about older Mercedes here). Then...

    Registering a "parts-only" car

I was wondering if anyone has an answer to this question. You know how auto wrecking yards like to declare a car to be "parts-only", never to be driven on the public roads again (because I think then they pay less in registration fees)? What if I come along and buy the entire "parts-only" car...
