I have a stupid question. I noticed when looking at the various valve springs most seem to have a colored stripe on them, some are red, green gold etc. What does the stripe signify?

Are valve covers the same for all small blocks? I got some and the box says for 273, 340 & 360 I thougth they would all be the same so I tried them on my 318, but they hit the rocker arms is there a difference, or are these just cheap valve covers.
