Thinking of going with the cam listed below in my rebuilt 340. Question I have is, why does a roller cam require a bronze distributor gear? I don't see it I guess. Where the gears mesh the cams seem to be the same. Let me know the reasoning. And also does this seem like a pretty good cam?

I have a question? I'm looking to purchase a 340 .040 with KB243 pistons. They should come above deck .018. Would I be able to use a closed chamber head if I go with a .045 to .060 head gasket. Or is there something i'm missing?

I finally pulled the 340 out of the parts car. I was hoping for a standard block, but after tearing it apart someone had already been in it. My question is there is nothing on the VIN pad on the bottom of the block its blank. Is this a common thing?

Was told the best way to set initial timing is with a vaccum gauge. Is this correct? He said to set it when it pulls the most vaccum. I bought a gauge to set the air fuel mixture on my carb, can I use it for the timing also? Thanks Rick
