Was told the best way to set initial timing is with a vaccum gauge. Is this correct? He said to set it when it pulls the most vaccum. I bought a gauge to set the air fuel mixture on my carb, can I use it for the timing also? Thanks Rick

Yes, that is the correct way. You increase timing in small increments keeping the idle rpm constant until you find max manifold vacuum.

Depending on your cam this could be 15-20 degrees BTDC and at that range you will also now have to reduce the mechanical advance internally in the distributor to keep in the 34-36 range the sb mopar head likes.
