So I just bought a 5.7 to start my swap project, but I'm trying to sort out the most cost effective way of getting the engine all fixed up and ready to go. The issue is that about 3/4 of a inch or so of ring land chipped off and bounced around in one cylinder before finally making it out of the exhaust. The bore on the bad cylinder has some light scuffing, but really doesn't look that bad. A bore would clean it up fairly easily, but the other cylinders are still good so I was thinking about just sleeving the one to save money on pistons. The head, however, looks pretty chewed up. It didn't break through into the water jacket any and it may just be largely cosmetic, but I was thinking about just getting a new head to replace it pending how much it would cost to get it cleaned up. That being said, while looking for new heads I saw listings of 03-05 and 06-09 as separate pieces. Are there really any changes between the heads themselves from 05 to 06? I saw where the ignition wire setup changed, but nothing regarding the heads themselves. Additionally, is there really any difference between the passenger side and the driver side since I have seen them listed differently as well?

Only difference between heads are the ignition and valve covers.. However there is a difference between drivers and passenger heads.. two different heads.

I would contact Stu at inertia I bet he has some spare pistons laying around for you.. He's a vendor on here.

I actually got a stock piston as part of the deal, the engine was more complete than I originally thought, unfortunately it's missing the coils. Need to figure out what I want to do about the MDS setup as well. I have no intention of using it, but getting rid of it is extra money I'd rather not spend. I think I might be able to clean up the head enough that I could run it, but I was going to take it to a shop and see what they thought. I planned on a set of Inertia heads eventually, just going to be a ways away since I was sort of building in stages due to wallet limitations.

Turns out it looks more like it dropped an intake seat than chipping a ring land. Pulled the valves on the bad cylinder and only found half a seat still in there. Hoping I can get it fixed, read where someone else had pretty much the exact same problem and got it fixed up and back on the road. Need to just take it around to machine shops and see what they say.

I have a set of 08 coils for sale of you want them. Also as far as the MDS you don't need to spend extra coin, you just need to get the caps for the units. Stu should have them.

I had heard that the MDS lifters were just weaker for higher lift cams, so they might be a breaking point. I figured I'd drop Stu a line and ask about all the valvetrain stuff anyway though since I was hoping to do a cam swap while the engine was on the stand. How much were you wanting for the coils and where are you shipping wise? Also, have you got the wires with them by any chance?

there will not be any wires. It's coil on plg. The 05 and older had wires the 06 and up do not. You will have to swap to plastic valve covers and change the plug for the coil packs as well.

The motor is actually an 06, so that works out well for me. I thought there was still a short wire for the second plug (one plug on the coil and a short wire to the other). What changed between the covers? Are the mounting bosses for the coils just in different locations?

Edit: Well, nevermind the wire thing, just looked up the coils and I see what you mean. Hadn't see the dual coil on plug setup before, been looking at older engines too much I guess, lol.
