1/4 mile vs 1/8 mile

Yea other than possibly deeper gears, shouldn't be any significant changes. Unless you're talking chutes/ brakes etc neccessitated from the higher trap speeds in 1/4. Its not like the 1/4 car is set up to idle out to the 1/8 and then haul butt. It just keeps pulling a ways farther.

I do both with my '70 Duster. 6.40 all day in the 1/8 and 10.1 all day in the 1/4. 4.56 gears and 31.5" tires. Could go with 30" tires but I don't like to take it over 7000rpm.

No changes. If its optimised in the 1/4 it wont improve in the 1/8 by putting more gear in it. My home track is 1/8 mile and I cant count the number of times I've seen guys do that and get nothing in return. Even went down that road myself 4.56 to 5.13. Car didn't pick at all, but did become more inconsistent in the 60 ft.

Went from 3.91s to 4.30s (the 3.91s were worn out) and got nothing in return on the 1/8. Bumped up to 28" tires and now hit its trapping about 6500 on a fast 1/4 mile track. Wish I would've went with 4.10s even though a majority of time is spent at the short tracks.

I tried 5.13 gears after running 4.86 in both 1/8 & 1/4. 5.13 would have been too much for the 1/4 and I didn't see an ET gain in the 1/8.

Focus on one car and optimize it for the 1/4. Overgearing, even for the 1/8, may hurt consistency, especially when track prep may not be the best. Consistency and predictability wins bracket races, not fastest ET. Racing the same car will help you get it sorted out and familiarized with it much faster & easier. Most of all, you won't be spending twice the money and twice the time to set up two different cars!
