I never thought about this until putting together my 360 this weekend but when the dots are lined up un the timing chain gears it was in #6 firing position, not #1 firing position. Is this right or am I going crazy? I am used to diesel engine timing and they reference #1 TDC for timing purposes. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Your right. Now that I think about it, anytime I have been there on set up, it never fired up. I had to pick up and drop the distributor to get it to run. Now why don't they tell you this?

After I checked TDC and cam centerline I happened to look at the dots and the cam was 180 from the dot to dot position at #1 TDC. I am like, WHAT? Thought I did everything 180 out and then checked and re-checked and put it back the way it was, but dot to dot is #6 TDC. The books are useless for this, and I have 3 different books.
If the engine is in the car this could really drive someone crazy.

when the dots are lined up, yes you are on # 6 tdc and #1 overlap. after lining up dots, rotate crank one turn, this will bring crank dot back to top and cam dot will be at top, now you are on #1 tdc, can degree cam from here. the cam rotates only half as much as crank. all mopars, Gm,s are this way. the fords are at tdc when marks are lined up. yes, the books nevertell you this, all they say, is ,rotate motor to TDC, to line up dist.

Yeah, it's both marks in line, but both ON THE TOP of their respective shafts... Another thign I've done more than once is to indicate off the first lifter in the LH bank. That's the exh valve for #1..not the intake...lol
