Had my butt handed to me by a 401 powered Gremlin X. So, yeah, I'll give it the muscle car badge. There was also a pretty nasty Matador cruising around the ol hometown, too.

Was that 401 powered Gremlin stock? And what were you driving when you got beat?

Just had to look this one up...

Randall 401-XR

Randall AMC dealership in Mesa, Arizona received AMC's endorsement to build 401 cu in (6.6 L) V8 powered Gremlins. The cars started out as 304 V8 models from the factory and after Randall's modifications would run 13.90's at 103-106 miles per hour (171 km/h) in the quarter mile, for $2,995 (US$15,680 in 2012dollars[12]). Known as the Randall 401-XR (X for Gremlin X, R for Randall), a total of twenty cars were built for the street and one for the strip during 1972, 1973, and 1974.[39] Car Craft magazine tested one with some modifications and achieved 115.07 miles per hour (185 km/h) in 12.22 seconds while still remaining a "totally streetable, daily-driver".[40]

that was a lame article,no muscle cars at all. i was going to say any mustang fairlane ,with a 289,any 73 up firebird trans am even the 455s.any camaro after 72, etc all slow pigs....and amcs can be very fast muscle cars

Anybody else notice that GM had more cars on that list than any other automaker? And that the 2 Mopars were tied for second place in terms of available horsepower, only beaten by the GTO? And that a Mirada was apparently more badass than a Trans Am with the cease fire injection? ADVANTAGE=MOPAR!!!:blob:

70 SS 396 El Camino. The guy that had the Gremlin said it was stock (original engine) Neither car was in "stock" trim. (It's how we rolled back in the day).

So what you're saying here is that MOPAR was the least crappy of the extremely crappy?? Not sure if you would want to have that as a selling point in an ad. I think it's almost like being king of the dipshits... at least you're king of something.

Hummm... Anybody else count the cars on the list. For some reason I only see 9 cars on their list of 10 wimpiest cars. LOL... Great journalism:violent1:

The tenth was just too painful to mention?

The Gremlin they list as a "muscle car" is a 1978. By no means muscle. What beat your 396, well that car was prepped with an after market engine etc.. Read ab7fh post above.

I hitched a ride home from the dragstrip when I was a kid in a 401 4-speed Gremlin. It was pretty quick. Scarry really.

As you wish.
My reply was to Mopar410's questioning if anyone thought a Gremlin was a "musclecar". I do. Was it a 78? Don't know, don't care. I couldn't tell you the difference between the years of them odd looking little dudes. I can say I lost a race to one. I can say the owner said it was a 401. I can say it looked like it came with the car. I can also say I can't tell you the difference between a 304, 360 or a 401 without crawling under the car and looking at the casting on the block. (I believe it actually says engine size for retards like me and you).
So at the end of the day, what difference does it make? What's your point? Whatever makes you feel better, I'll agree to it. Let's go with it was actually a 304 and the dude was just being nice and telling me it was a 401 so I would feel better. Does that make your world level again?
