Hello all,

Read 40 pages of the 8.8 swap thread. I didn't get a good sense of whether the explorer disk brake setup will clear the 14" mopar OG road wheels. (Magnum 500 style)

They are Mopar road wheels out of a 73 charger that had front disk brakes. They DO clear my factory '73 dart front disks.

Push comes to shove I will settle for drums, this is a 4 door Dart after all....

P.S. if anyone in the socal area has or knows someone with an explorer rear axle already narrowed with 3.27-3.73 gearing and trak lok, or narrows rear ends, drop me a PM please...

If this is better suited to the drivetrain forum please advise!

Thank you all!

-Frank

i don't know of any rear disc set ups that clear 14" wheels

I have an 8.75 with LBP axles and 94-04 Mustang disc brakes (basically a Dr Diff knock off) AND 14 in chrome Magnum 500’s and they clear the calipers, rotors , everything.. The Magnums are close but they do clear. Regular steelies don’t clear, neither do 14 inch Rallye wheels

Wow, thank you guys for the quick replies!

65 Dart Man, when you say 94-04 mustang brakes, which ones do you mean? V6/ mustang GT brakes appear to have a 10.5" diameter while the 4.6 DOHC (cobra?) are 11.65".

The explorer drums are listed as 11.22" per rockauto.

Maybe this will help: it looks like the caliper piston in the v6/GT models are hollow while the 4.6 DOHC (cobra?) seem like the retractable type with a flat face and two v notches on the face... no idea if they need the special tool or not to push in.

The rotors are the 10.62 or close to that) in diameter and for the LBP 8.75 axles, the center register hole on the rotors needed to be opened up 40 thou to clear the register on the acle

I tested my 99 explorer 8.8/disk with the 14” rally wheel has a 3.75” back space (does not fit). Hits the caliper does not seat. Hope this helps.
