18'' Wheels on your A? What size tires are you running? Post Pics!

Just wondering if anyone out there has 18s on their A-body.
I know that there have been pics posted of some wheel combos (18s front, 20s back, etc.), but I want to see 18s all around.

I've got a set of 18'' 2005 Dodge Charger wheels I'm getting ready to mount up to my 74 Swinger and I'm wondering what size tires will look the best. I've got a set of 2 225/60s that I was planning to put on the back, stock 05 Charger size, but the fronts have 235/40s on them and I'm wondering if I might be able to fit something a little larger on there for a better ride and to protect the rims.

Once I get them on, I'll post some pics of my own car!

My rear tires are a little bigger than yours, but I got them for $20 for the pair with 1/2 tread, so I'm not complaining...
 
I think 17's are the most popular on here...18's are a little to big IMO...

I agree, I am a fan of 17's myself. BUt I would love to see pics of 18's.

This one had american racing 18x10 with 6.5 backspace.toyo proxe 4's.245/40/18 all the way around.It looked killer on this car and handled very well but it is the 1st and last time I will use wheels & tires like that again.The pendalum has swung he orther way for me,I am all about original these days!

I've got 18x8 Boss 338's, I will try and get a picture up tomorrow.

I've had people say the same to me about the 20s on my Intrepid, but I love them and wouldn't have it any other way.
I think 5258's car is a perfect example of what a nice set of 18s can look like, and so is Clutch's car.

They aren't for everyone, but I got them for dirt cheap with tires and I just want something unique of my car that doesn't blend into the other project muscle at the local shows.
Someday I'll spring for the 17'' Torque Thrust IIs I really want, but until then my $300 Charger 18s will do...

Do the newer Chargers and Magnums have the same bolt patterns as the older Mopars if so I might try my wifes tire and wheels on the Duster , Wont she be pissed when she see s the old tire and wheels on her Magnum (he -he)

did you get the larger size originally for the handling advantages or looks?
btw, your ragtop looks excellent with that wheel tire package

No the bolt pattern is not the same but very close. Sorry but I don't have the numbers. The old wheels are standard and the new wheels are metric.

I have seen different opinions on wether the difference is enough to matter.
 
old are 5x4.5" newer are 5x114.3mm, which on a conversion calculator are the same.

No it's not. This is a common error. The original bolt pattern on our cars is 5x4.5 like you said the new pattern is 5x115mm. enough imo to cause error.

It's like the neon wheels I bolted onto my 68 to roll it around on the stock 5x4"axle it's close but the short amount it's rolled has amounted to ruining the neon wheels for any other use because the holes are ovaled out like crazy now.

IMO redrill the axles and brakes for the wheels.
 
Years ago, I had an affinity for the suicide Lincoln convertibles of the early 60's, specifically 61-64. During my search, I was trying to get smart about the market and I was talking with a Lincoln specialist in CT., (called Bakers) about the cars he had on the lot. Some were for sale, others in for repair.

I noticed several with big wheels. I ask why they were in and he replied "the wheels are bent".....he went on the explain that the way the old school engineers designed the suspension systems, they took into account a large side walls as part of the road absorbing system. In other words, the spring rate/(suspension) travel distance, shocks and tires all figured into the "ride".

With the absence (or diminished) side wall, I was wondering how these cars are riding and if anyone has noticed bent wheels too?

How much of an issue would .7mm be?
 
Paulyv100,those were a great set up on that car for when you wanted to tear it up around corners etc. But for the orther eighty five percent of the time when you just wanna drive the car and enjoy it, those tires take some of the fun out of that.

i'm certainly no expert, but my hunch is that rim failure on a early lincoln is the product of too much weight for an aluminum wheel with a low profile tire. those things were easily twice the weight of an A-body.
i'm using 17s with my suspension firmed up and i'm pretty happy with the ride. i was considering getting 40 series tires when the time comes but now i think i'll stick with 45s whether i go with 18" rims or not.

It was enough to be a deal killer for me.I was going to use the charger wheels but I just got the mustang bullet wheels. They are the right size, Ford just changed the way they classify them to fit in(standard to metric).

Like I said I bolted a set of neon wheels to my darts sbp and noticed just moving it around the garage a few times and flat towing it for 10k once that there where alot of filings from the wheel nuts. imo wouldn't even try them.
 
You're talking a 1.6mm difference between 5x100mm and 5x4inch. Not that big of a deal at first glance, BUT my brother in law had some wheels on his G6 that weren't the exact bolt pattern for his car ( not sure what the mm difference was but i'm thinking it was like 5mm ) . He had about 1 broken wheel stud every 6 weeks. .7mm is probably an acceptable variance.
This is one of those things, some will be ok with it, others just wont...kinda like 18's on an a-body ;) I kinda like the big shoe, pro touring look myself

I've got 5x115 wheels on my 5x114.3 Intrepid, and if you center the wheels properly on the lugs/hubs, you dont have any problems with them. Two 2000 mile round trips to Pennsylvania and an additional 10000 miles on the car since I put the wheels on it prove that beyond a reasonable doubt to me.
I know you guys are mostly old school, but having done this already and played this game, I've learned a lot about it and I've got plenty of confidence in putting these wheels on my Dart.

Moving on, lets post some damn pictures of these A's with 18s!
