I have a 65 Barracuda 904 ball and trunion style trans with two shifter cables. Will these come out from the outside of the trans or am I going to have to rip the trans apart to get them out? I've only tried to get the front one out so far with not much luck. I shined a small flashlight in the hole that the cable goes into but I can't really see how it's attached. I haven't even tried on the rear cable yet.

TIA

they will come out--- there is a spring that snaps around the cable & holds it into place. You need to use a flat blade to pry it loose(remove the neutral safety switch) . I ended up dropping the pan & it was very simple-
the rear one is the same or you can remove the housing from the tranny & let it hang-- once apart you will understand the mechanics.

The fsm has pictures & it has been posted before, Lawrence

Both can be removed without pulling the pan. It's just a matter of tripping the clip that holds the end of the cable. The rear one is fairly easy because the access is better. Start by pulling the allen head plug in the small aluminum housing that covers the parking pawl. Let the fluid drain out a bit then release the cable clamp nut/stud. Back the nut out until flush with the end of the stud. Then tap that end so the stud moves to the side and releases the cable housing. Pull the cable out as far as it will go and then with a small flat blade screw driver, poke around inside until you feel the spring clip that holds the end. Gently pry it to the side and the cable will release and come out. If you just can't seem to figure it out, pull the little cover off and you can see how it works. Once you get that one out you can see how it's held in so it makes it easier to figure how to do the shift cable which is the same idea but just worse access. I try to keep from turning the adjustment wheel so you don't have to readjust when you reinstall it.
Tie a rag around your wrist and have fun!

Thanks for the info Lawrence. Since I posted my question I did figure out how the rear cable comes out after dropping the housing, I just haven't finished doing it yet. ;) One last question, will I have to drop the pan to get the front cable out or can I do it with the pan still on? The reason I ask is because the trans is not in the car and it's still full of trans fluid. I really don't want to try and drain all the fluid out and make a giant mess in my shop. I'm not really set up to drain this thing with it on the floor, it's a heavy bugger. I'm just trying to forward some parts from it to a fellow FABO'er from down under.

Thanks for the info Mark. I had to take a phone call halfway through typing my last message so by the time I submitted my reply you already had the answer for me. I'll let ya know how it comes out.:-D

Thank you to both of you. It took me less than 30 seconds to get the front one unhooked once I knew what to look for. The back one was self explainitory once I got the housing off. The front was easy as pie and only took me two or three cracks at it with a screwdriver to get the clip to let go.8)

Thanks for teaching this old GM guy a few new tricks.:-D
