I can't even get enough clearance to get the top snap ring back in. The pistons installed properly and bottomed out and the bottom snap ring is in. Any ideas?

Just know that your far better off to set the clutch pack clearance in the middle of the range than on the tight end.... When set to the tight end the clutches drag creating heat which leads to premature failure... Also it reduces the time needed to apply clutches so you get shift overlap.... Shift overlap is two elements applied at the same time..... Not good...

Forward clutch wont cause shift overlap it is applied on all forward gears.
Tight forward will cause neutral creep.
True of the forward clutch not the rear clutch.. Still it's better to be in the middle of the range than the tight end of the range....
