Aaahhhh! The sweet feeling of success!! Even on a seemingly small part of the process...

Work safely! Carry on Marine...

Ladies and Gentlemen. Today was a very very successful day!
I got a new air compressor and 2 new impacts. I got manifolds off. Hood off. Inside cleaned out. Found two stripped out intake bolts. Motor is locked up still
But my biggest accomplishment! I have A drum that will spin!!! Yes only one but I felt great watching it spin. And the look on my grandpas face was worth the work
Turn out my breaks had rustd to the drum. Haha
Listening to him talk bout his dad buy the car off show room floor brand new made me wa, t to keep at it all night. But dinner was on table couldn't miss that :)

Sounds like you are making some good progress, I can really relate your story, my father in law handed my 65 down to me and I think I have already spent more than it will ever be worth and I haven't even started the interior or serious body work yet..but I plan on passing it down to my kids one day so I am ok with it. I bought a lot of my mechanical/electrical parts from rockauto online, and picked up wiring harnesses from yearone. Not sure how work much you have put into your engine yet, but mine sat for 30+ years and I poured mystery oil down the cylinders, and filled the engine to the top (like a fish tank) with oil and just let it sit for a week. Then I drained everything, refilled it to the right level and I was able to turn it over...so you might get lucky

Good luck!
Steve

I am looking for a 318-360 to drop in for now.
I want to keep the 273 and go threw it piece by piece to make it show room quality motor.
But I want the car to run until then. Once I free up all 4 ill shoot for the motor and breaks. I just wanna hear some exhaust noice from that old car

Nice work,Tank 33! You learn,as you go. Nice find,on tools, and getting a goddamn drum to spin. Check Craigslist, and here for a running 318. When your ready, throw a post in the"Mopar parts wanted" Forum.

Im gonna start looking around for the 318. gotta find brake assembly all the way around. because the guts are all rusted up pretty bad. anyone have an idea on a place to buy the guts for the drum??

Well today i got those pesky stripped out intake bolts off. and let me tell you... IT WAS BAD! there was an animal turd in there. dont ask me how but it was in there.

No luck so far on a 318... or brake assembly. :(
i got the manifolds off and drained oil in motor. lots of clumpy stuff coming out..
also gotta look for a set of 14" wheels.

Great to hear Grampa talking about the car when it was new. It'll be swell to see the look on his face when you take him for a ride in it! Those brake part are available - Rock auto and NAPA online come to mind. The parts, your Factory Service Manual, and some patience and you're there! Also check out the "Brakes" forum here on FABO

If all you need is the 318, check out Pick 'n Pull in Dallas. http://www.picknpull.com There are three locations, prices are decent, and if the one you get is bad, they'll swap for thirty days. They have wheelbarrows and a-frames with hoists you can use to get your prize out of the car and up to the checkout area. Lots are gravel paved and most cars are off the ground.

Remember that the cast cranks were not machined for pilot bushings unless the car came with a manual transmission.

You have two options:

  1. Have the crank on the 318 machined for a pilot bushing. I recommend this course of action.
  2. Use the forged crank from your 273. No problem swapping as long as lightweight rods are maintained.

The south location has a 70 Dart in it that ought to be good for brakes. It may even be a 318 car which would give you the 90º oil filter adapter. I can check this weekend if it stays dry.

I also have a set of 5, 14 x 4½ on a 4-inch bolt pattern. The biggest tire I'd put on them is a 195/70-14.

You sure don't get help like this on craigslist! That car could be almost a one-stop shop for ya! Those are basic stock wheels but they'll sure get ya up and rollin' around. What a GREAT forum!!

Is that dart still there? What's the condition of it. Heck I may pick it up as a secondary project. Sure do love me a dodge dart

Well it's been a while but I finally have my house set up enough that I can move the VW out of the way for a while and go over to my dad's place to pick up my valiant.
Would have been over sooner but we had tornados coming through texas and mess up my house pretty bad and now flooding but I'm not letting it stop me.
Time to get back to work on this old car!
I'll take pictures once I get it moved over and keep everyone updated with my progress

Long time no see, James. Good to know that life "stuff" has slacked a bit and left tie for the important things - your A body! Joking, of course O:)

Interesting project that brings back memories for me and the 1965 four door Valiant I purchased for $125 back in the 1970's. Had an automatic but I put in a four speed from a 1964 Barracuda. Restored four doors are priceless.

Definitely good to be back BC!

Dibbons.. I love the stance you had on yours.
I want something aggressive with this little car and when I get farther along I'll know more on how I want it.

also I've added another Mopar into my life.
2002 Dodge Dakota quadcab.
I'll post pics as soon as I get my valiant moved

Gotta fix the trailer to move the project - - I know that situation well!

Just now, the 64ragtop is up on a Kwik Lift driveway ramp for transmission work. The pushbuttons jammed up solid. I think it's pretty minor, but getting around to it is tough.

Funny coincidence! My daily driver is an '02 Dakota extra cab.
