1966 273 Question

if that motor is in a 66 ply barracuda it isnt the orignal 273,,if it was the orignal 273 2 or 4 BBL carb,,it would have adjustable rockers,,not stamped steel rockers,,,im guessing some one changed the motor,,with either a 1969 273 or and 1967 and later 318....unless they changed the heads and cam on the orignal 273,,my guess motor was replaced,,,,look and see whats on the side of the motor telling you the cubic inch,,
 
They aren't that rare and back then there were no numbers matching. I think you could fine one in much better shape to rebuild for alot less then what it would take to restore that one.

The only way to tell for sure is tear it down and have a look. I've rebuilt worse (3 pistons needed to be bored out of the block), but it ain't easy finding any kind of supercharged Lycoming V8 for a 1937 Cord. My guess from one picture; the heads are junk, but you may be able to save the block and crank. Pull the heads, oil pan, and have a look see. Me, I'd start looking for a better core.
 
Ya, unless you're sure it's the numbers matching motor, don't bother with it. As Fstfish said the original would have adjustable rockers so either the whole motor was changed or at least the drivetrain. Get underneath and check those numbers...they're way up on the sides of the block.
 
No such thing as a numbers matching motor pre-68, just period correct. Take it apart, have it tanked, bead blasted and measured up. You'll know real quick whether it's worth spending any more time on. Running but tires 318's are a-dime-a-dozen so junk it if it needs sleeves. Unless I was trying to do a 100% correct resto, I'd replace a worn out 273 with a 318 any day. The only outward difference is the number stamped in the front of the block.
