1966 Dodge Dart

Hello All, My last post to this thread was just about 2 years ago and Im sure everyone thought I was done with the restoration. Well to be honest that is not true. What I can tell you is I have put about 500 miles on the car since 2019 and have run into some issues. The worst issue that I have found is that the car once driven and sits for a short period of time (1 -2 hrs) will start very very hard. Now im not talking about cranking over hard. Im talking about a fuel issue that seems to be like a vapor lock or maybe something even worse. I have put on a heat sink plate underneath the carb to restrain heat boiling the gas as it sits after being driven. That didnt do anything to make the issue better. I believe that the fuel lines that I put on the car get to hot from the exhaust. I ran the 1/2" fuel lines down the inside of the frame rail on the Passenger side. The worst spot is just near the header collectors. they come about 3" above the collectors and i believe the heat while sitting soaks into the fuel lines and pushes fuel into the carb.
Another issue is that I still havent done an emergency cable setup. Although its not a show stopper it needs to get done.
Also the engine still gets a little to hot when sitting in traffic on a hot summer day so I may need to try fitting in a 1" larger fan which would mean a redo of the fan shroud.
Some upgrades that I need to complete that were originally planned are the narrowing of the rearend housing by 1" on both sides and shortening both axles, the adding of power steering which i bought a new steering box and complete pump assembly with brackets, installing the 2x4 set up along with the edelbrock aluminum heads.
Also the fuel gauge needs to some updating as its not very accurate. So as you can see there is a lot of work that needs to be done and it was easier to just drive the car the last 2 years rather then to address the changes that were meant to happen.
Well now I need to take the time to get this all done. I hope to get at it this winter and finish sometime next year. I will continue to update this thread until the car is complete.
As always thanks for following.

Hello Rod. Sorry to hear of further issues with your 66, but good to hear from you. I will continue to follow your thread. sgrip65

Decided to finally start making some changes. First one completed is the gearing. I’ve been sitting on a 489 case with 4:56 gears and a spool. Made the switch last night and even got a short test drive in. Everything working good. Here’s a pic of the chunk that went in.

I finished all the polishing of the trim parts for the drivers outside. I spent quite a bit of time today polishing and got all but the drip rail back onto the car. I started a thread in the trim section to see what will make that rail go on the easiest. Its super tight and I dont want to put any dents in it on the way back on. I also put the drivers door seal in place. The seal is really pushing hard against the door so I might end up having to make the latch a little tighter although Im hoping the seal will relax some and compress allowing the door to go back into alignment!. Everything else fit pretty well. I had to grind a slight bit off the rear quarter window trim so the trim would go in far enough. The front door trim fit great and the inner upper trim looks like it will fit nicely as well. I had to order the drip rail rubber so I left that one loose because its going to be easier to off the car. Here are a few pics from today with everything on.

I the photo above Im not sure if i need to trim that door seal hanging down or if it tucks in under the interior trim piece. Im thinking it will need trimmed.

This is the billet gas cap that one of the members here sell. Its a super nice fit. Im thinking im going to leave it the natural material look at this point. I also have a stock cap that is painted white. But all the stock caps leak gas and the billet cap is suppose to not allow a leak. View attachment 1715275461 View attachment 1715275462
This pic above shows how straight the lower door trim and quarter trim are. Im very happy with them.
Lower pic shows the new door seal. It has the edge of the door pushed out about 1/16th. Im hoping it collapses some.

I'll tackle the drip rail once someone answers the thread I started.

Hey Rod. I know it's been a while, but I'm hoping you can help me out since your photos are so great. I'm in the middle of installing all new weatherstrip on my '66 Dart. Where did you end up cutting the top of the door weatherstrip? Do you have a photo of where the end of it is relative to the A-pillar trim? Does it end at the corner of the window frame?

Also, which direction does the weatherstrip section that glues to the leading edge of the vent window frame and down the front of the door slightly go? Open side in or out? I've read conflicting answers on here.

I just looked at my original weather strips and it looks like I need to replace them also .

The closed edge goes toward the interior.

Thanks! Replacing them is a small chore, but it's one of those small things that makes a big difference.

Just saw your post so ill have to check my pics and see uf i can answer your questions. Im away for the weekend so i may have to wait until weds or thursday to answer.
