how would i determine if my 66 barracuda is a formula S? can it be told by the vin?

I have only Valiants from that era, but I think that the Formula S barracuda had the Tachometer.

Fender tag decoding, from the early cuda website For 1966 Models:

There are two areas to decode on a fender tag. The bottom of the tag (SO, NUMBER, BDY, TRM, PNT) is very similar to the 1964-65 version. The numbers under the capitalized alphabet indicate engine size, carburetor, transmission, and other options info.

Under the "AB" you will find the following: 11=170cid /6, 21=225cid /6, 31=273cid 2bbl,32=273cid 4bbl.

Under the "C" you will find the following: 1=3speed Manual Trans, 3=4speed Manual Trans, 5=auto trans.
----------------------------------------------------------
Under the "F" you might find the following..7=Formula S.
----------------------------------------------------------
Under the "T" you might find the following..7=Tachometer.

Under the "Y" you might find the following..1=black conv. top,2=white conv. top,3=blue conv. top.

For the second area of the tag, the Shipping Order number, date code and plant production Sequence Number are similar to that of the 1964-65 tag.

The BDY or body number code has been enhanced:

Valiant 100...................Code
---------------------------------------------
2dr sedan.....................VL21
4dr sedan.....................VL41
4dr wagon....................VL45

Valiant 200...................Code

Also check for some of the Formula S options such as the aforementioned Tach. It would also have a front sway bar, larger than standard torsion bars, and other HD suspension components. Hope it is for your sake, Geof

Did you check under the rear seat to see if the broadcast sheet might still there? I lucked out when I bought my 66 fifteen years ago confirming all the options on the car including the Formula S one.

Just because it has a tach, front sway bar & hd suspension does not mean it's a Formula S. My 66 Barracuda has all of those options, plus disk brakes, 273 Commando, console 4 speed, etc. It is not a Formula S. Those options could be purchased separately. My car came with all of that, but had a vinyl top. You couldn't get a vinyl top with the Formula S package because of the stripes. So the person who ordered the car originally wanted all of the go fast goodies, but wanted the look of a vinyl top, so they ordered it all separately.

You can decode the fender tag to figure out the options. That's what I did because the broadcast sheet was long gone.

Good point Lee, I would not normally think that someone would go through all the trouble to order everything seperate, but if you wanted an option not available in a package, obvoiusly it can be done. I'll bet yours is a pretty rare fish. I was also under the impression that you could not decode the car as a Formula S by the fender tag, as it will not denote the actual package, only identify certain options included in the package, such as the 4 barrel engine. My bad, I wish I could see your ride, I really dig these early A's and yours sounds right up my alley. As you can see in my avatar, I have the same thing as you minus the vinyl top. I did it my way and just didn't badge it as a Formula S, because it isn't one. I also haven't seen but a handful of broadcast sheets ever recovered from these early A's, it would be nice to find one in his car to solve this for him!! Happy motoring, Geof

I have yet to see the car...i do know its all original, has never been apart. the PO sent me what is supposed to be the fendertag but, as this is my first early Barracuda, i cant de-code it...52640456 then it says 6dy trm is p4x. paint code is999b

Trim code is... P= Premimum, 4= Bucket seats, X= Black
Paint code is... 999 I believe is special order, like Buffed Silver or Petty Blue or some other special order color.

Shoot the rest of the numbers when you get the car and we'll give it a look see! geof

as far as the special color is concerned...its pink, playboy bunny (maybe mary kay) pink...

yeah I guess it is a pretty unusual combo of options. Click the link below for a couple photos of it:

wouldnt that be wild,, a pink formula S,,,
another option on the S car would be 14 inch rims and hub caps, and 8 3/4 rear was also an option in 66

So that black car in the pics was a pink Formula MK ?
Sonny and Cher ordered a matching pair of pink Mustangs in 67.
Inspired more pink paint purchases.

The 999 code was pink, but its not a Mary Kay car and i doubt is was a playboy car. It was just pink and fell under the 999 code because it was planned to be a low volume color.

No, the black car is mine. It used to be Citron Gold metallic. I posted the photos because cosgig mentioned that he would like to see it. My car is unusual in that it has all of the Formula S stuff except the stripes because it was ordered with a vinyl top. My point was to point out that you could get all of that stuff separately.

Sorry for the confusion.

Weren't the strips an option even on the formula S?

Hey lilcuda, thats a good looking 66 you have there, but I was a little disappointed that it is not sporting it's vinyl top. I am really interested in seeing what that would look like for some reason. Still a sweet ride though, you should be proud of it and the fact that you have had it for so long. Thanks for sharing it with us!!! Geof

Hello, this was an interesting thread, sorry for my bad english, i´m from Sweden ;-), I aslo have a -66 Barracuda with all option parts and I have for a long time tried to figure out if it is a formula S, now I can see it´s not.
It has 4 speed manual transmission, original tach (7 under T), front sway bar, front disc brakes, the harder suspension, console, 14" wheels and 8 3/4 rear end with sure grip.
I can see after reading this thread it was deliverd with 2bbl, (I think no barracudas were delivered with 4bbl engines in Sweden from reading the broushure)
I looked at my fender tag and found a 9 under D, does anyone know what that means?
Sorry for hi-jacking the thread, and thanks for all information.

-Niklas

Thanks! The vinyl top was long gone before I ever owned it. It does still have the wide drip rail mouldings that were used with the vinyl top. Yeah, it kind of amazes me that I've had it so long. I've talked about selling it many times, but never decided to go through with it. One time I brought it up, my wife protested saying that she likes it and I should keep it.
