1967 Cuda FB project

-
Got in the shop early and did a few things. Cut out the small section of trunk floor that attaches to the inner wheel house. Blasted it and fit it back in the area behind the inner wheel house panel. Made a section between the two halves and put in the creases and bends and fit that between the inner and outer wheel houses.
Starting to look like the factory did a super tub job!!!

Going back out after supper and do some more.:blob:

I am really enjoying watching your build. Putting ideas in my head. Way over my fab skills though. Looking good.

Thanks for the kind words. I have to be careful, tho. I tend to get ahead of myself. I brought in a dash out of a 73 Charger today to look at "fitting" in the cuda. No where near needing that yet!!! lol

Went out after supper and finished fitting the last panel in the wheel house. Still have a little welding and some grinding to do yet but was getting tired. Been in shop since 7am this morning. Altho, working on this project really has me motivated. The holes you see are where the spot welds were for the trunk lid hinge support. I have to have somebody help me with a piece of copper so I can fill them with weld. (Can't reach all the way around by myself to hold the copper on the backside.)

More this weekend!!!:blob:

Figured I would throw a couple shots of the Chally on here. Full Viper frame. Fuel Injected 340. Viper T-56 6 speed. Need to spend a lot of money on sheetmetal which I don't have right now.

Someday...................................:burnout:

I'm lovin' the Challenger already. You seem to be heavy into the 'sports car' horsepower plus handling. - Not to get you sidetracked from the 'Cuda but are you planning any external body mods on the '70? - Or are you thinking about keeping it full Kowalski on the outside.

I have to "kick out" the fenders and q.panels to clear the tires because it sits so low. The rocker pinch weld is only 3" off the floor. The roof is really low, looks bad-***! Have to get some better pics.
Going for a "coke bottle" look similar to the 71-72 Plymouth B-body. It's a shame to cut up 700.00 q.panels to do that but it's my only choice. So, I am trying to save up about 3K for all the new AMD panels I need. Debating on doing the flat black theme on the outside.

Man that is gonna be tough trying to 'coke bottle' that body style with that sharp body line running down the middle. I like the idea but I wonder how well it will work. It seems to me that the body line might look screwy from certain angles no matter how well you do the work. It would probably be easier to pull off with a '70 'Cuda that doesn't have that line. - Wish you luck with it. It will be interesting to see.

I'm not a huge fan of the flat black for color choice. If the car really turns out nice a gloss finish would make it pop even more. I wish that Michael Musto (Mr. Angry from Bullrun fame) would have put some shine on that '69 Charger Daytona project.

I think I'm gonna shave the drip rail and fill the chrome holes along the doors and rear windows. Definitely gonna put in a narrowed 71-74 E or B body dash. Frame connectors. Haven't decided how much to tub the rear, mini or more. It will be lowered as far as I can get it. Thinking about ventless door glass also. I wonder if a Duster window will fit in the door. In general, going for the "no chrome" look. Snakeskin green with black accents. I need to find a hood to graft that 73 RR hood bulge on! Also, trying to figure out how to loose the rear bumper.
We goin' custom up in here!!!!!!!!:blob::glasses7:

[/QUOTE Agreed, here. You can shoot a matte color , even with a mica/metallic in it. (just my opinion) Love the build, might look at some the 70's IMSA series race cars, for ideas.

Yup, not totally sold on the flat either. Just want some kind of race car look that's "raw"???
The 70's Trans Am cars are what I am looking at. We will see about the "coke" thing. I only need about 1"- 1&1/2".

Thanks Abody, Been doin the stuff all my life and with every car it seems to get a little easier. lol :prayer:

Finished some welding on the wheel well and did some more grinding. Came time to put the trunk lid hinge support back in. Had to trim the bottom where it used to be welded to the curve of the inner wheel house. Now it is going to be welded in the area where I made the flat 5" extension. So, had to redesign the flanges on the bottom of the bracket to fit it's new location.

Got it sorted out. It's all welded back in again! In these pics, you can see where it used to be welded to the inner wheel house.

This side view shows how much shorter the bracket had to be.

I started looking at the dash mod again.................. Kind of surprising how much stuff Chrysler engineered from the same "basics". I'll get more into that later.

Now, to just get motivated and do the other side.:blob:

-'bout time you get something done. You must be taking those sleep breaks again. LOL. A lot of folks don't realize those braces need to be modified when you mini-tub.

It's been awhile since I had to do that on our Charger. It looks like it's easier on the fastback because you don't have to work around the X-braces and there's more head room without the package shelf. I did the Charger with the quarters off.

Nice build snakbit!
I'm doing a 67 f.B. build also. Not as extensive as yours though. I don't have nearly the experience as you, so maybe ill grow a pair by the time I get started on my next one. LOL! I'm subscribed... Can hardly wait for your next post.

Thanks ariffle!!!

Well, here ya go. I messed with the 73 Charger dash tonite. (I couldn't help myself.)
It's just the frame but I really like it! Now I just gotta figure out how to recover the dash pad.:D Cut 3" out of the center in ashtray area. I don't smoke any more so it can go!!! LOL

Have to do a little welding here and there on the dash frame and paint it up and put away until needed.
Oh, it's an AC dash btw.

I've never been thrilled with the original Barracuda dash so I'm eager to see what the '73 Charger dash looks like in there.

Well, 67'cuda, I think you're going to like this mod. I decided this morning to work a little more on the dash mod and started welding up splices, etc. Here I did the one where the ash tray was. Cut a piece to fit and welded it in. Ground it down, no more ashtray. lol

Moved on to welding an original a-body section that bolts to the windshield frame. Had to trim some of the b-body dash back to get to fit right. Lost the b-body defroster slots but I think I'll use the simple a-body ones. Got the flange welded and ground down.

On to the side supports.

I discovered that the b-body dash angle was off compared to the a-body dash. So I cut the bottom attaching flanges off and welded them to the b-body dash frame to kick the bottom of the frame out about an extra inch.

Then I took the crappy worn dash pad from the Charger and cut 3" out of the center vent area.
View attachment WP_20141123_010.jpg
Now if I can get "Just Dashes" to make me a one-off.....

Then I cut a 3" section out of the vent plastics removing most of the center vent. Just taped the two pieces together for mock for now. Looked alright except for the Charger moniker in there so I took that out. Went to look at the a-body glove box door for the Barracuda emblem and found it's actually part of the plastic dash finish...... crap.
View attachment WP_20141123_014.jpg

So I took the whole panel from the a-body glove box door and trimmed it down to fit the s
area between the dash vents. I like it a lot. Will use some adhesives to permanently attach the emblem panel, then finish with some bondo and paint it. I think I am going to paint the dash insert and vent insert body color. Don't like the fakey wood grain theme.
View attachment WP_20141123_017.jpg

I need to find a b-body ralley cluster.

After lunch I will get back to the wheel wells.....................

I'm liking the dash mod a lot. But if I might make one suggestion it would be to shorten the silver Barracuda section between the vents to the same height as the vents. And I think I'd reduce the length so that there was a gap between the Barracuda section and the vents that would be similar to the border on either side of those vents.

Correct. I just set the emblem there for picture purpose. When it goes in for good, it will be set in the same level as the current vent panel. When done, it will all be the same color and flush.

Then it was off to the passenger side window rust issue. I figured I better fix these areas before I cut the bottom of the car out moving the frame. Just gives me piece of mind that it's stronger.
View attachment WP_20141123_028.jpg
Had to fix the bottom piece first. After I cut the rusty stuff out I had room to get some rust stop in there where you can't see and the rats built a home at one time.
Top view of the bottom piece fitted.

Here it is all welded and ground down. Now I can work on the top piece.
