Gee, I can't help but think that the mustang is quite a bit lighter than the cuda here.....no matter what the published figures say. I'm assuming that's an 8 3/4 rear.....

I don't know what the books say but two friends in the 70's each had one a 67 barracuda 273 hp, solid lift, 4 spd. and a 65 289 hipo, solid lift, 4 spd.
Standing stop ,
Higway kick down,
rolling start.

It didn't matter the mustang was much quicker and faster. This Mustang was more comparable to a 340 car. It was stock except for some rattle can primer spots.

Hmmm, Don't know about the 67 273 4bbl HP Barracudas, but in late 1964, I bought a brand new 65 Dart GT with a 4 speed, 273 4bbl HP "CHARGER" motor... The first one "Brads Motors" sold in Fall River Mass... (had the "black" tip resonator before they switch to stainless steel with the rolled lip) I raced and beat lots & lots of 65 289 power pac Mustangs... easily I might add...

That "Dart GT" was what made me a "Mopar" man for the rest of my life!
Yes, I'm an old guy... who had these cars when they were NEW!

Note: Anybody can call their car "STOCK"... and unless there was a tear down, who can say otherwise... So, I take that with a "Grain of Salt"...

I don't know what the books say either but I know because I had a 66 Dart 273 and I was NEVER beat by a mustang. Their was no contest. And I ran a bunch of them.

* .413" Intake/ .435" Exhaust ~ 259* / 270* Duration ~ 40* Overlap

This was a 'secret' over the counter Parts Department Part #.

I don't know where the f stock came from in 67 because iam looking at a 73 rule book and they ran N/SS or they ran J/S. The power/weight is what they go by and the class was 12.50/12.99 or N/SS or J/SS.

1967 NHRA Stock Classes with Weight-to-Horsepower

A/S..........8.70 to 9.49

B/S..........9.50 to 10.59

C/S..........10.60 to 11.29

D/S..........11.30 to 11.88

E/S..........11.89 to 12.49

F/S..........12.50 to 13.99

It was a 'bizarre' break down.

1967 Performance Results.................................... 16.35 @ 82 MPH

I don't know what the weight difference was from a 1966 Barracuda to the 1967, but I give the edge to the Mustang on this one.

Have never been impressed with any small block Fords.

I had driven early model Darts & they seemed to run well for what they were.

Mike,

The 1966 Barracuda 273/235 HP 4-Speed was supposed to
weigh in at #2940 lbs. same as the 1967 Barracuda.

1967 Barracuda at #2940 lbs.

1966 Mustang GT 289/225 HP = #2874 lbs.

1967 Mustang GT 289/225 HP = #2915 lbs.

From 1967 thru 1970 in Stock Class, we ate up the Mustangs. The 289/225 HP cars were never much of a threat.

1967 = F/S
1968 = J/S
1969 = K/S
1970 = L/S

The best ones we ran against were running 14.80's @ 90 MPH, over a full second slower than our 273 Commando.

But.....what's the secret? Didn't all manufacturers offer hotter cams for their engines through their perspective parts dep'ts/Ford Racing/Direct Connection etc.....?

Cudavert,

It was not uncommon in the mid-1960's for Dealers to get a 'special package' from the Factory.

This 'kit' was to be used on a Dealer 'Show Car' only, to take prospective customers out in for Test Drives
in a 'juiced up' but Stock looking car.

The 'special kit' was usually installed on the Sales Manager or Service Manager cars,
unless the Dealership had a Performance Car Manager.

In most cases, it was a 'special' Camshaft {with a secret part number} and a
doctored up Carburetor, and Distributor Advance-Kit.

Common for the 1965 thru 1967 Ford Mustang GT 289/225 HP, was the
'Improved Performance Hydraulic Camshaft' and a 600 CFM Autolite Carburetor.

The 'package' was installed at the Dealership, on the Dealer 'Show Car'.

Then the Salesmen would take the 'customer' for a test drive in the 'juiced car'.

It was a smart selling practice.

1967 Mustang GT

Typically with the GT, you would get the 3.25 Gears with the Wide-Ratio 4-Speed.

With that set up, you would be hard pressed to get under 16.50's with the 289/225 HP
'A-Code'.

3.50 Gears got you under 16.50's.

4.11 Gears were available with the 289/271 HiPo 'K-Code'.

Mike, no disrespect.

But I don't remember any 289/225 HP Mustangs {1965 thru 1967} doing much after 1967 and later.

In 1965 and 1966, the Mustangs 289/225 HP were somewhat successful
because there was so many of them, when compared to the other cars.

* 1965....... F/S or F/SA
* 1966....... G/S or G/SA

Back then, 15.30's would pretty much guarantee you a Class Trophy.
