I've seen where 1969 340s are supposed to be Turquois, and others where they are supposed to be red. I know 318s were red for '69. All the picts of 69 340s that's Iv'e seen have been Turquois.

Is there a Plasi-cote or Duplicolor code for Turqouis? thanks

I dont know of a spray bomb other then the Mopar Perf stuff.

PPG# is 13195 but you need to delete the metal flake. Is should be around $50 a quart, Maybe able to get away with a pint or you can have your local paint jobber put it in cans for you.

Duplicolor and VHT make that color. Don't buy the Mopar Performance paint, it is a can of runny watery crap! It also stains instantly from any antifreeze you get on it.

I was just sitting in my E-Z chair by the fire, and I got this question that popped into my head.
Does anybody have an answer on where & when the auto makers decided to paint the engines in their brand of automobile? How did they decide upon the color? Some one had to decide to do this, if it had been left to the bean counters, you know they would have nixed the idea. (saving money) Was it a monkey see, monkey do? Who was the first to do it? Inquiring minds want to know! Does anybody have any ideas or theories? I'm sorry for hijacking this thread, but when the thought came to me, this was the thread was on top of the list.

Im not sure but all the paint codes I have for chrysler engines come back as colors used for exteriors as well.

I'm not sure of the production date, but later on in the 69 year, Chrysler switched to red on the 340's.

Hughes Engines sells the different colors and it is a good product. Not thin and runny like some and seems to hold up well!

Red was only used on 340s in 68. Turquoise for 69, Hemi Orange from 70 til april 71, Blue from April 71 up.

Mine is a March 69 production date and it was torquoise also. I know that 70's were all orange but Adam somewhere I remember reading that some of the late 69 production engines were painted orange and that carried over into the new production year.

I know...you can't believe everything you read, right?

4/21/69 was the prod. date, it was a 318 car but I have seen other small blocks that were orange.

From MyMopar: 318s would have been red in 69. 340s red in 68 but turquois in 69, then 340s were hemi orange in 70.

My 340 is now red, If I need to repray turquois, nows that time with it on the stand. However...IMHO, red looks nicer, esp. with the R4 body color.

ANyone have the VHT or Duplicolor code for Mopar P4120752?

Well I'm going on what I took apart. I bought the car from the original family it is matching # and it was orange. I still have the motor it has 93,000 miles on it and ran good when I took it out. Like they say never say never when it come to Chrysler. It dosen't matter to me anyway I like street Hemi orange and that is what the stroker motor in it now is.

318s were red through 69, then blue in 70. The only exception was the 1969 "police" 318, which was hemi orange. again...according to MyMopar...but who really knows anyway. Paint it the way you want!

I agree with that.. I would just paint it whatever color you like the best.. My Dart will eventually be B5 blue.. I painted my 360 hemi orange, when I dropped it in the finished engine compartment, I just loved that color combo...

My Dart 340 has 1/09 production date and I believe the original color was Turquoise.

In the 70`s I had a 69 GTS with a 340 and the engine was blue, (not turquoise) because I had several big block cars and I knew the difference. Now it`s possible that somebody had painted the engine with the late 340 blue paint though, so I can`t say with authority that it was a factory color or if it was a discolored turquoise. I have read that for the most part 68 340`s were red , 69`s were turquoise with a few (late year models) painted orange and 70`s were orange. I don`t think it`s uncommon for many late year models to be painted in next years color. Chrysler was not a company to waste anything. I painted my 67 ,273 engine red (Mopar spray can) just two years ago and it`s faded really bad, it looks almost orange now. My 68 340 engine, which was originally red, appeared to be orange after 40 years. It`s easy to see how some colors can be mistaken.
