We pulled the windshield molding and clips off a 1970 duster to replace the windshield.
There are two different styles of clip for the molding. There are four of one style and the rest are a different style. I am wondering if someone installed four incorrect clips in the past. We were going to reuse the clips because they are nice, but if these four are incorrect, then I will order a complete set of clips. I will try to get a picture later today. Does anyone know if all the clips are supposed to be the same style?

Every time I see that Mini in the air I crack up, That is a great picture.

I can't believe nobody chimed in on this, Maybe if you had some pictures it would help.

I got a picture and some additional info. My body shop said there are 4 of the clips that have the green paint mark on them, but maybe he counted wrong because the reproduction clip kits seem to have 5 of those clips. I would have to go to the shop to count the clips myself if necessary.

I think that I need to offer a prize to jump start this thread. The first person to post the correct information wins my never ending appreciation for the help.

To make this clip issue even more confusing, there does not seen to be any consistency between the replacement clip kits from the different reproduction parts suppliers. Some of the kits have 4 or 5 of the green style clip, and in some of the kits, all the clips are the green style. We went to look at a 1974 duster that the windshield was removed from, and it only has 2 of the green style clips.

@Davezilla
Short clips run horizontal Long clips vertical down the pillar posts If your top covers your pillar posts you install 6 clips , no material 4 clips will work.
Color of the clips varies from outlet dealer to outlet dealer, and sometimes the actual clip count.
I did not have cloth top but installed 6 pillar clips anyway. 3 per side
Hope this helps....

I appreciate the reply. I was just using the reference to the green being the taller ones so everyone knows which one I was talking about in the picture. Do you mind if I ask where you learned that information? I am still a little confused. My 1970 duster does not have a vinyl top and it has 4 of the green style clips. The 74 duster does have a vinyl top and the 2 taller green style clips are on the bottom, just to the left and right of the passenger side wiper blade pivot, so the vinyl top material is not in that area. There are 3 holes in each vertical A pillar for a total of 6 vertical clips on each vehicle and 23 clips total on each vehicle, so the number of total clips per vehicle does not seem to change with the addition of a vinyl top. Thank you

The search engine on this site is the best. And info from other web sites as well there is more out there then FABO, and a course the shop manual.

I have been doing a bunch of searching, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. That is why I asked where you learned that information. I downloaded a parts manual, but it didn't provide any clear answers. Do you know if the service manual discusses the different clips? I dont have a manual, so I would need to buy one it it has the answer.

I just check my shop manual it only shows the number of clips used. But I must apologize to you, this would be for a 70 Dart not a Duster should have taken the time to read more clearly.

You don't have to apologize. I appreciate anyone that is trying to help. I believe the Dart has a different windshield shape with more squared off corners, so that probably explains the difference between my Duster and your Dart.

It’s been many, many years but I recall a mixture of clips on my ‘70, no vinyl top. Seems the odd ones were across the bottom.

Looking back at notes: Out of all the front clips, 5 were different. There are 9 total across the bottom. I reinstalled the tall clips (with slotted screw holes) in the following positions, counting from either end. 1, 4, 5, 6, 9. I cannot say with 100% certainty they were in the correct spots but in the end the trim went back on okay.

...and an initial clip kit from Restoration Specialties has the wrong tall clips (bottom right). They were too tall. I sent pics of the originals and got the correct ones.

When I compare the clips on my 1970 duster to your picture, I have 19 of the ones on the top left, and 4 of the ones on the top right. The 1974 duster has 21 of the ones on the bottom left and 2 of the ones on the top right. Hopefully someone has the information to finally clear this up. It looks like a bunch of people have run into this issue in the past.

In 1970 the windshield garnish was stainless steel. At some point the factory switched to shi**ty anodized aluminum. That could account for slight changes in clip style and type used at a given location.

I see no reason to believe someone installed 4 of the wrong clip on you car. Like I said, I had 5 distributed across the bottom on mine. My originals match yours.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if that 74 duster had stainless or aluminum trim because it was removed several years ago. I think it is interesting learning about this stuff, and now we will know to look for those small differences on the next project.

I never got an answer from any of the suppliers. My body shop had to just guess, and spread the different clips along the bottom edge, then adjust the trim as good as possible. It is pretty sad that 50 different businesses will sell you those clips, but none of them have any idea where they go. Everyone will line up to take your money, but no support.

Ok. My guy is just having an issue with the trim staying down. They are used repops (been used before) so maybe they have been sprung. Lol. I'm waiting to hear back in what they want me to do. I may end up getting another set.
